Brant Hurter - MLB News, Rumors, & Updates

Optioned before season finale The Tigers optioned Hurter to the rookie-level Florida Complex League on Sunday.

Impact The transaction was merely procedural, as Hurter wasn't in line to pitch in Sunday's season finale versus the Pirates after tossing 1.2 innings in relief a day earlier. The Tigers reinstated Jack Flaherty (forearm) from the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. Hurter wrapped up the 2026 season with a 3.06 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 24:15 K:BB in 35.1 innings across 29 appearances.

Shelved with spine inflammation The Tigers placed Hurter on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to lumbar spine inflammation.

Impact Hurter was lifted from his most recent relief appearance in Friday's 7-4 win over the Orioles due to what manager A.J. Hinch had referred to as a back issue, and follow-up tests evidently confirmed that the lefty reliever was contending with lumbar inflammation. Detroit recalled right-hander Ricky Vanasco from Triple-A Toledo to replace Hurter on the active roster and in the bullpen.

Sustains first loss Friday Hurter (4-1) allowed a run on two hits and a walk across 1.2 innings of relief to take the loss Friday against the Royals. He struck out one.

Impact After Kyle Finnegan began to unravel in the bottom of the eighth, Hurter came on in relief and escaped without further damage to keep the score 3-3. The lefty came back for the ninth and got the first two outs of the frame, but a Nick Loftin double followed by a Kyle Isbel single gave him his first loss of the season. Despite the setback, Hurter has been excellent out of the bullpen this year with a 1.77 ERA and 0.84 WHIP across 20.1 innings.

Secures win in bulk-relief outing Hurter (4-0) allowed two hits and a walk while striking out two over 3.1 scoreless innings to earn the win over the Rangers on Sunday.

Impact Hurter was given bulk-relief duties in this bullpen game, and he delivered a strong performance. He entered the contest in the third inning and had his longest outing of the season, throwing 26 of 38 pitches for strikes. He's kept runs off the board over his last four games, covering eight innings with a 5:1 K:BB in that span. For the season, Hurter has a 1.50 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and 12:4 K:BB across 18 innings as a multi-inning reliever. Casey Mize (thigh) and Justin Verlander (hip) are not close to returning, but the Tigers will be able to get by on a four-man rotation for most of the next two weeks, which limits Hurter's potential to rack up wins if the team doesn't use a bullpen game again for a while.

Impact Hurter came on in the sixth inning with the Reds up 3-2, then picked up another win out of the bullpen when the Tigers scored four times in the seventh and twice more in the eighth. The lefty's three wins are already one behind his total from 2025 and half as many as he had during his encouraging 2024 rookie campaign. Hurter has been solid overall this year with a 2.45 ERA and 1.00 WHIP across 11 innings so far.
