Guardians' Austin Hedges suffers 5th concussion, placed on 7-day injured list

Guardians catcher Austin Hedges has been placed on the seven-day concussion list, retroactive to Wednesday

Placed on concussion IL The Guardians placed Hedges on the 7-day concussion IL on Friday.

Impact Hedges will be eligible to return from the injured list next Friday, though his activation will depend on how quickly he's able to progress through MLB's concussion protocol. While he's out Dom Nunez will come up from Triple-A Columbus to give Cleveland extra depth at catcher.

Picking up start Wednesday Hedges will start at catcher and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Twins.

Impact Earlier in the day, top backstop Bo Naylor caught the final six innings of the Guardians' 6-5 loss, which was the resumption of a game that was initially suspended Monday in the fourth inning. Since the Guardians and Twins are essentially playing a doubleheader Wednesday, Naylor will get some rest for the second contest of the day, allowing Hedges to pick up his 16th start of the season. Hedges is batting just .143, but he'll continue to get occasional starts versus lefties and/or when Naylor requires rest.

Impact Hedges made the most of his first game action of the regular season, swatting a solo homer to left field in the third inning. The veteran catcher has shown the ability to hit for power in the past -- he had 18 long balls in 2017 while with the Padres -- but he's been mostly a backup in recent campaigns due to a lack of on-base skills (his OBP hasn't exceeded .241 since 2019). Hedges is working as Cleveland's No. 2 catcher this season behind Bo Naylor.

Re-signing with Cleveland The Guardians agreed to a one-year contract with Hedges on Wednesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Impact There's no word yet on the financial details, but Hedges will return to Cleveland as Bo Naylor's backup. The 32-year-old slashed only .152/.203/.220 with two homers in 66 contests for the Guardians this season but is lauded for his defense and handling of a pitching staff.
