Impact Smith is a starter by trade but moved to the bullpen last season while struggling to a 4.83 ERA. He'll head back to his old role for now, though he could be the one to make way if Luke Weaver (thumb) returns to the rotation. Smith's first start will come Sunday against the Padres.

He's been delayed in camp by offseason shoulder inflammation, however. He'll avoid a trip to the injured list but will be given a few extra days at the start of the season before he's asked to pitch. He's lined up to pitch April 12 at home against the Astros.

Impact Souza and Billy Hamilton were among the four players cut from big-league camp Tuesday, with both outfielders likely seeing their chances of making Seattle's Opening Day roster come to an end when the Mariners announced Monday that top prospect Julio Rodriguez would begin the season in the majors. The 32-year-old Souza appears set to open the season at Triple-A Tacoma, unless Seattle releases him to pursue opportunities with another organization.
