Impact The 26-year-old righty threw five innings in relief April 3, so he is stretched out enough to qualify for the win in this start if he pitches well. He gave up two earned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four in that long-relief appearance. Zac Gallen will likely rejoin the rotation before Smith is needed again, so he could move back to the bullpen after this spot start.

Playing time drying up Smith is not in Friday's lineup against the Reds.

Impact Kole Calhoun (knee) was activated from the injured list, so Smith now appears to be Arizona's fourth outfielder and backup first baseman. He should still get some starts, but would likely need another injury to someone ahead of him on the depth chart to regain the strong side of a platoon.

Impact Gallen, who felt discomfort while throwing his curveball this spring, used that pitch in each of his innings Wednesday and reported no such discomfort. That's encouraging news for the Diamondbacks, whose starting pitchers rank 28th with a 6.95 ERA.
