Impact Abbot got himself into a few jams in the first and fifth innings but managed to work his way out of them unscathed as the Reds provided him with plenty of early run support. The rookie left-hander was especially effective with his four-seamer in the contest, but struggled with the placement of his off-speed pitches throughout, which led to the three walks. Abbot has now won his first two starts for Cincinnati and is yet to allow a run over 11.2 innings, despite issuing seven free passes over that stretch.

Abbott was already expected to get more than just a spot start, and his results Monday should cement that decision. He's tentatively slated to face the Cardinals on the road his next time out.

Impact Cincinnati has five healthy starters at the moment, so expect manager David Bell to clarify whether one of those pitchers is moving to the bullpen, the minors or the injured list to clear a spot for Abbott, or if the 24-year-old lefty will become part of a six-man rotation. After earning a promotion to Louisville following a dazzling start to the season at Double-A Chattanooga, Abbott didn't slow down over his seven Triple-A starts, pitching to a 3.05 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 54:14 K:BB in 38.1 innings. The strikeout upside Abbott offers will make him an intriguing speculative pickup in deeper leagues, though he could endure some hiccups in his first exposure to the majors.

Now at the final rung of the minor-league ladder, the 23-year-old lefty could have a realistic chance at making his MLB debut later this season if he can continue to make bats miss and limit walks in the International League.

Dominating Double-A hitters Abbott has 36 strikeouts and three walks while sporting a 1.15 ERA and 0.57 WHIP in 15.2 innings through three starts for Double-A Chattanooga.
Impact A 64.3 percent strikeout rate and 58.9 K-BB% is a quick way for a pitching prospect to generate buzz. While Abbott was a known prospect entering the year, most evaluators had him pegged as a back-end starter. Last year, he had a 4.75 ERA, 3.48 FIP, 1.37 WHIP, 30.8 percent strikeout rate and 10.6 percent walk rate in 20 starts at Double-A. Look for Abbott to quickly get promoted to Triple-A, as he now has over 100 innings under his belt at Double-A and will turn 24 in June. From there, he could force a promotion to the majors in short order, given that Luis Cessa and Levi Stoudt are currently in the big-league rotation. Abbott's hot start oversells his prospect value, as he's a cerebral lefty with a low-90s fastball, quality breaking ball and improved changeup, but there's no doubt he is trending up as much as any Double-A pitching prospect.
