Placed on IL
The Reds placed Abbott on the 15-day injured list Friday, retroactive to Aug. 20, with a left shoulder strain.
Impact
Abbott was initially the Reds' probable pitcher for Friday's game against the Pirates, but Cincinnati named reliever Buck Farmer as the starter before eventually putting Abbott on the shelf. If the left-hander can return once eligible Sept. 4, he'd only need to miss one more start. Cincinnati recalled Alan Busenitz from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move, though it's unclear if Busenitz will fill Abbot's spot in the rotation. Abbott has a 3.72 ERA across 138 innings spanning 25 starts this season.

ROTOWIRE
Likely for bulk innings Friday
Abbott will not start Friday against the Pirates, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Impact
Abbott was originally listed as the probable pitcher for Friday's game but Buck Farmer will be the official starter. Farmer hasn't completed more than two innings in any appearance this season, meaning Abbott will likely enter the game early on and pitch for several frames.

Saddled with 10th loss
Abbott (10-10) took the loss Sunday, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk over five innings against the Royals. He struck out four.
Impact
Abbott didn't pitch particularly poorly but was mainly done in by the ninth spot in the order, with Dairon Blanco leading off the third with a bunt single and a stolen base that eventually led to the initial run, then a homer by Blanco in the fifth that pushed the deficit to three. An additional run scored on a sac fly and Abbott's outing was over after five innings. Sunday marked the eighth-consecutive outing for Abbott in which he's alternated allowing two runs or less followed immediately by four runs or more. It was also his fourth loss in five decisions after winning eight of his previous 10. If trends are any indication, Abbott is in line for a quality start during his next outing and the matchup seems to fall in line with that plan as he's next slated for a road matchup against the punchless Pirates.

Picks up 10th win
Abbott (10-9) earned the win Monday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over 6.2 innings against the Cardinals. He struck out six.
Impact
Abbott rebounded from allowing three homers in his last start to shut down the Cardinals, with a Nolan Arenado run-scoring single in the third representing the lone blemish against him. Abbott was on track to complete seven innings while allowing one run or fewer for the fifth time this season, but a two-out error by Elly De La Cruz extended the inning and Abbott was pulled after tossing 93 pitches. The 25-year-old lefty has now tossed a career-high 133 innings while holding a 3.59 ERA and 1.29 WHIP with 110 strikeouts. He's next scheduled for a home matchup against the Royals.

Hit hard in Wednesday's loss

Impact
The Ks helped salvage some fantasy value for Abbott, but the southpaw continues to have trouble keeping the ball in the yard, serving up a pair of solo shots to Jake Burger and a grand slam to Derek Hill. Abbott's been tagged for eight homers over his last five starts and 23.1 innings, stumbling to a 6.56 ERA and 1.93 WHIP over that stretch. He'll try to turn things around in his next outing, which lines up to come at home early next week against the Cardinals.

Fans eight in loss
Abbott (9-8) allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk over 4.1 innings Friday, striking out eight and taking a loss against the Giants.
Impact
Abbott was tagged with a pair of runs in the second inning, starting with a solo shot by Casey Schmitt. Abbott needed 90 pitches to get through 4.1 frames and forced 13 whiffs. He failed to complete at least five innings for the third time in his last four starts. During that stretch, he's posted a 5.40 ERA while going 0-2. For the season, Abbott owns a solid 3.41 ERA with a 97:46 K:BB through 22 starts. He's currently lined up for a start in Miami next week.

ROTOWIRE
Hit hard in Tampa
Abbott (9-7) took the loss Saturday, giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks over four-plus innings as the Reds were downed 4-0 by the Rays. He struck out two.
Impact
The southpaw fired 60 of 88 pitches for strikes but was getting too much of the plate, as six of the eight hits off him went for extra bases including back-to-back homers in the fifth inning by Alex Jackson and Yandy Diaz. Abbott has been erratic in July -- three of his five trips to the mound resulted in quality starts in which he allowed just one total run, but he got torched for nine runs in 7.1 innings in the other two outings. He'll take a 3.38 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 89:45 K:BB through 117 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Giants.

Logs quality start
Abbott didn't factor into the decision Sunday against the Nationals, allowing two unearned runs on six hits and three walks across 6.2 innings. He struck out one.
Impact
Abbott came out of the All-Star break strong, with both runs scored while he was on the mound Sunday going unearned. Still, the Reds could only put two runners across on offense, keeping Abbott from earning what would have been his fifth win in six starts. After posting a 3.87 ERA in 21 starts as a rookie, Abbott has taken a sizable step forward in Year 2, tallying a 3.39 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 19 starts and 106.1 innings. He's expected to make his next appearance against the Rays in Tampa Bay next weekend.

Stumbles against Marlins
Abbott allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four over 3.1 innings in a no-decision against the Marlins on Saturday.
Impact
The Cincinnati offense provided 10 runs of support (seven against opposing starter Edward Cabrera), but Abbott couldn't take advantage in what looked like a highly favorable matchup on paper. Abbott allowed a pair of homers and induced a modest eight swings and misses on 78 pitches. It was a disappointing way to end his first half after he'd posted a 2.70 ERA over his previous seven starts, and there may be more regression ahead, but regardless the 25-year-old lefty is locked into a rotation spot for the Reds.

Fires seven shutout frames
Abbott (9-6) allowed three hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings Monday, striking out eight and earning a win over the Rockies.
Impact
Abbott was dominant Monday, retiring nine straight batters to begin the game and allowing just two runners to reach scoring position. He forced a season-high 19 whiffs; eight of those came via the fastball while his sweeper caused another seven. Abbott has won four straight starts and seven of his last nine dating back to May 21. He's allowed three or fewer earned runs over his last seven outings, posting a 2.70 ERA during that span. Abbott will carry a 3.06 ERA into his next start, which is lined up to be at home against Miami.

Picks up eighth victory
Abbott (8-6) earned the win over the Yankees on Wednesday, allowing one run on three hits and four walks while striking out two batters over 6.1 innings.
Impact
Abbott wasn't overpowering -- he induced just six swinging strikes and notched only two punchouts -- but he got the job done with his sixth quality start of the campaign. The southpaw allowed only one extra-base hit (a double) and didn't yield a run while he was in the game, as the only score charged to his ledger came after he departed with one out in the seventh inning. Through 17 starts, Abbott is up to eight wins, which is as many as he logged across 21 outings as a rookie last year. He's improved upon his ratios with a 3.28 ERA and 1.20 WHIP, though his 6.9 K/9 is a dramatic drop-off from his 9.9 K/9 last year.

Blanks San Diego in third win
Abbott (3-4) earned the win Tuesday over the Padres, allowing four hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings. He struck out two.
Impact
Abbott's now gone seven innings in consecutive outings, allowing just one run on eight hits in that span. The southpaw has quietly put together a strong start to the season -- his ERA is down to 2.68 with a 1.09 WHIP and 43:15 K:BB across 10 starts (57 innings). Abbott will look to keep rolling in his next outing, currently lined up for Sunday at home against the Dodgers.

Set for first spring start Monday
Abbott is scheduled to make his first Cactus League start Monday in a split-squad game versus the Mariners, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.
Impact
Though his performance faded over the second half of the season, Abbott still submitted a promising rookie campaign in 2023, compiling a 3.87 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 120:44 K:BB over 109.1 innings. While Cincinnati beefed up its starting depth in the offseason with the additions of Frankie Montas and Nick Martinez and the expected return of Nick Lodolo (tibia) from injury, Abbott's spot in the Reds' Opening Day rotation still seems to be fairly secure.

ROTOWIRE
Struggles early in loss
Abbott (8-6) took the loss Wednesday, allowing three runs on eight hits over 2.1 innings against Cleveland. He struck out one and did not walk a batter.
Impact
Abbot ran into trouble early on after surrendering a leadoff double to Ramon Laureano to open the second. The lefty allowed five consecutive hits to start the frame and then gave up hits to two of the first three batters he faced in the third before being relieved by Daniel Duarte. Abbot has now failed to make it through five innings in four consecutive starts while his one strikeout Wednesday marked a season low. He's also lost his last three decisions and now holds a 6.10 ERA in September.
