Nolan Arenado hits 30th homer, Cardinals beat Reds 6-4

Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer in the eighth and had three RBIs and Paul DeJong had a solo shot to help the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-4 on Saturday night

New role considered transitional Reyes, who earned his sixth win in his most recent appearance Thursday versus the Dodgers with two scoreless innings, will be utilized as a multi-inning reliever for the remainder...
Impact Reyes was essentially bounced from closer duties after a rough patch in August, but the shift to more of a long-relief is part of a longer-term plan anyhow. The team believes it can begin laying the groundwork for Reyes to build back up to a starter's workload through the bullpen before he heads into an offseason regimen tailored to that same goal. Reyes looked comfortable in Thursday's victory after allowing home runs in back-to-back appearances, as he surrendered just one hit and no walks while recording two strikeouts over his pair of frames.

Coughs up grand slam Reyes (5-8) gave up a walkoff grand slam and blew the save in Sunday's loss to the Brewers. He was charged with one run.
Impact Reyes was called upon to protect a 5-2 lead with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth inning. He served up a walkoff grand slam to Daniel Vogelbach on his second pitch. He had worked two clean innings this month since blowing his last save chance Aug. 29. Giovanny Gallegos also struggled Sunday and the Cardinals' closer gig is still up in the air. Reyes' ERA is up to 3.00 through 60 innings.

Blows another save, role in flux Reyes (5-7) took the loss and was charged with a blown save Sunday against the Pirates after pitching one-third of an inning and giving up three runs on a hit and two walks while r...
Impact Reyes served up a three-run homer to Yoshi Tsutsugo to blow a 3-1 lead Sunday, marking his third blown save in his past five outings. The 27-year-old is a solid 29-for-33 in save chances on the year and has a 2.95 ERA in 56 outings, but he's walked a tightrope by issuing 44 free passes in 58 innings and is clearly struggling with St. Louis attempting to make a playoff push. Shildt didn't commit to making a change at closer, but it's clearly a move the Cardinals are considering. Giovanny Gallegos has a 3.11 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 72:15 K:BB over 63.2 innings with 22 holds and two saves this season, so he's the likeliest candidate to receive save chances should the team move in a new direction.

Tsutsugo hits game-ending homer, Pirates beat Cardinals 4-3

Yoshi Tsutsugo hit a three-run homer off Alex Reyes in the ninth inning, sending the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals

Collects save No. 29 Reyes recorded the save with a scoreless ninth inning allowing one hit with two strikeouts in a win over Pittsburgh on Friday.
Impact It took only 12 pitches total for Reyes to close the door in the ninth to help secure a 4-3 win over the Pirates. This was a nice bounce-back showing for the right-hander who had previously recorded two blown-saves across his last four outings.

Tommy Edman hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, Paul Goldschmidt had three hits and the St. Louis Cardinals edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3

Blows third save Reyes allowed an earned run on two hits in one inning, blowing a save in Wednesday's 3-2, extra-inning win over the Tigers.
Impact The righty got two quick outs in the ninth before giving up a double and a game-tying single for his second blown save in his last three opportunities. Even so, Reyes has converted 28 of 31 save opportunities and boasts a 2.54 ERA in 56.2 innings this season. He has been less effective since the All-Star break, posting a 5.02 ERA and 15:10 K:BB in 15 second-half appearances, although he's still managed to collect eight saves in that span.

Goldschmidt 2 HRs, scores walk-off run, Cards beat Tigers

Earns save Sunday Reyes earned the save Sunday against the Pirates after tossing a scoreless inning, allowing two hits and fanning one.
Impact Reyes found himself with runners on first and second with two outs after allowing back-to-back singles to Ke'Bryan Hayes and Bryan Reynolds, but he closed the door after retiring Colin Moran on a line to right field. The hard-throwing reliever, who tossed 10 of his 13 pitches for strikes in this outing, snapped a short run of two games allowing earned runs, and he now has 28 saves out of 30 opportunities. He owns a 2.43 ERA across 55.2 innings in his first year as the Cardinals' full-time closer.

Impact The normally reliable closer experienced a rare stumble, allowing a game-tying solo home run to Avisail Garcia in the ninth inning and then hurting his own cause in the 10th with both a throwing error and a wild pitch. Reyes is now 27-for-29 in save opportunities, and he's given up at least one run in consecutive outings for the first time since July 4-5.

Earns another save Reyes allowed two runs (one earned) on a hit and no walks while striking out two in the ninth inning to earn the save in Thursday's win over the Pirates.
Impact Reyes had allowed just one unearned run in three innings across his last three appearances, but he fared worse in Thursday's outing by giving up a two-run homer to Bryan Reynolds. However, the righty bounced back and struck out the final two batters he faced. Reyes has earned three saves in his last four appearances, and he's posted a 2.25 ERA with six strikeouts in four innings during that time.

Locks in 26th save Reyes struck out one without allowing a baserunner across a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Tuesday against the Pirates.
Impact Reyes had one of his most efficient outings of the season, as he needed only seven pitches to record his 26th save of the season. Since walking four batters without recording an out Aug. 5, Reyes has struck out four batters without issuing a free pass across his last three innings. Though he has a 7.3 BB/9 across 51.2 frames overall, Reyes has maintained a 2.26 ERA and has blown only one save opportunity.

Charged with fifth loss Reyes (5-5) took the loss Sunday against the Royals, allowing an unearned run on two hits while recording two strikeouts over one inning.
Impact Charged with preserving a 5-5 tie upon entering in the ninth, Reyes ultimately faltered despite not allowing anything more impactful than a single. The right-hander's cause wasn't helped by a throwing error on the part of Paul Goldschmidt, either, and the outing ultimately resulted in Reyes' third straight losing decision. Despite the hiccup, the 26-year-old has proven reliable more often than not while converting an outstanding 25 of 26 save chances.

Notches 25th save Reyes struck out one batter in a perfect ninth inning and earned a save over Kansas City on Friday.
Impact Reyes needed just nine pitches to quickly mow down the Royals in the ninth and finish off the victory. It was his first save since July 27 and he's now 25-for-26 in save opportunities this season. Reyes is sporting a 2.36 ERA and a 60:42 K:BB through 49.2 innings.
