Impact Reyes suffered his first blown save Tuesday, but manager Mike Shildt didn't hesitate to turn to his closer to protect a one-run lead Thursday. The right-hander rewarded his manager's faith with the save, his 23rd in 24 chances this year. While he's allowed six runs across seven innings in July, there's little reason to think Reyes will lose his grip on the closer role. The 26-year-old has a 2.01 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 58:38 K:BB across 44.2 innings overall.

Impact The Cardinals entered the ninth inning with a 6-1 lead, so Luis Garcia began the inning on the mound. However, he was relieved by Reyes after loading the bases. Reyes failed to get the game back on track, walking two of the first three batters he faced prior to allowing a single and double to blow the lead. It was the first time Reyes was charged with a blown save this season, though he's now allowed six earned runs across his last four innings -- spanning five appearances. On the campaign, Reyes still has a 2.06 ERA, but he has walked 37 batters across only 43.2 frames.

Impact Reyes put the finishing touches on his 20th save of the season, working around a Christian Walker single with two out in the ninth. The first-year closer has yet to blow a save opportunity all year, logging a sparkling 0.96 ERA. Opponents are hitting just .141 off of Reyes, but his 30 walks in 37.2 innings of work could eventually lead to the occasional blowup. He's offset those control issues with 51 strikeouts.
