INJURIES
It’s not a stretch to say Cardinals’ Reyes could be a starter — either way, he’s pitching out of the stretch
In 2020, Alex Reyes notched a 3.20 ERA in 19 2/3 innings, while striking out 27 batters.

Avoids arbiter
Reyes and the Cardinals agreed to a one-year, $900,000 contract Friday, avoiding arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Impact
Back when Reyes debuted as a highly touted prospect in 2016, he probably assumed he'd be earning a much higher salary by now. Injuries have prevented him from getting his career off to a smooth start, but he looked good in 19.2 innings last season, with his 31.4 percent strikeout rate offsetting a 16.3 percent walk rate, leading to a 3.20 ERA.

Shuts door in Game 1
Reyes recorded the final four outs of Wednesday's win over the Padres in Game 1 of the Wild Card Round to pick up the save.
Impact
Reyes' first career postseason appearance couldn't have gone much better. He was called upon to face Fernando Tatis Jr. with the tying run on second base with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and was able to finish the inning with a groundout. He remained in the game for the ninth inning after the Cardinals scored an insurance run and got the job done, retiring the side in order.

Picks up save
Reyes allowed one run on two hits and a walk and struck out two over 1.2 innings to earn the save Sunday versus the Brewers.
Impact
Reyes entered the game with two on and one out in the eighth inning. He struck out Ryan Braun and Jedd Gyorko to end that threat. The Brewers tallied a run against Reyes in the ninth, but he was able to escape by getting Avisail Garcia to ground out for the final out. It was Reyes' first save of the year to go with two holds, a 3.20 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 19.2 innings. Andrew Miller figures to see most -- if not all -- of the Cardinals' save chances during the playoffs.

Grabs third hold despite struggle
Reyes was credited with his third hold in a win over the Brewers on Thursday despite allowing an earned run on two hits and a walk over one inning. He struck out two.
Impact
Reyes needed 31 pitches to record his three outs, and he left closer Andrew Miller with a thorny two-on, one-out situation when he departed in the ninth. The run that Eric Sogard, the first hitter Miller faced, drove in with his single went on Reyes' ledger, only the second earned run to be charged to the right-hander in his last eight appearances. Despite occasional control issues, Reyes has been a mostly reliable option for manager Mike Shildt, posting a 2-1 record, 3.00 ERA and an elite 12.5 K/9 over 18 innings

Possible save chances on tap
Reyes was identified by manager Mike Shildt as a candidate to see save opportunities the rest of the season in the wake of Giovanny Gallegos' (groin) placement on the injured list,...
Impact
Long on promise but often short on results the last three seasons primarily due to injuries, Reyes appears to be rediscovering the form that saw him wow with a 1.57 ERA and 10.2 K/9 across 46 innings back in his rookie 2016 campaign. The right-hander has proven an increasingly trustworthy bullpen asset for Shildt this season outside of a pair of hiccups, posting a 2.70 ERA and 11.5 K/9 over 10 appearances (one start). However, what could ultimately make Reyes a shaky ninth-inning choice is his trademark lack of control, which is evidenced this season by his 6.1 BB/9. Otherwise, the 26-year-old does have the ability to be dominant when he's on, considering he's averaging 97.8 mph on his fastball and sports a career-high 12.2 percent swinging strike rate at the moment.

Holding his own in current stint
Reyes, who was charged with his first loss in an extra-innings defeat at the hands of the Indians on Saturday, has nevertheless allowed earned runs in only two of seven appearances...
Impact
The promising right-hander's career has been a series of fits and starts due to injuries, but he's finally getting a chance to deliver a successful encore to an impressive 2016 rookie campaign and putting it to good use overall. Reyes did have a pair of hiccups against the Royals earlier in the week, but he's otherwise missed plenty of bats and also has one victory, which came in one of those uneven performances against Kansas City on Wednesday. Reyes' control, which has been an issue since his minor-league days, does continue to be a weakness; however, he can be dominant when he's honed in, with Saturday's two scoreless innings during which he only allowed just one unearned run and recorded three strikeouts without issuing a walk serving as the latest example.

Grabs rocky first win
Reyes (1-0) was credited with the victory in a win over the Royals on Wednesday, allowing two earned runs on two hits and two walks over two innings. He also struck out two.
Impact
Tasked with preventing a 3-2 deficit from widening when he entered in the eighth, Reyes got into trouble during his second inning of work after recording a strikeout of Alex Gordon to start the frame. The right-hander subsequently allowed a two-run double to Whit Merrifield that widened the Royals' lead to 5-2. The Cardinals' wild four-run rally in the home half of the ninth ultimately garnered Reyes his first big-league win since 2016, albeit under highly unusual circumstances. The 25-year-old did suffer further damage to his ERA, which now sits at a bloated 5.68 across 6.1 innings over six appearances (one start).

Throws one inning in start
Reyes allowed one unearned run on three walks while striking out two batters in one inning during a loss to the Cubs in the second game on Monday's doubleheader.
Impact
Reyes couldn't find his command Monday, throwing just 10-of-24 pitches for strikes. Fortunately, he's still sporting a perfect 0.00 ERA in two appearances this season with five strikeouts. It's unclear if Reyes will remain a starter/opener or get more work out of the bullpen moving forward.

Starting second contest
Reyes will start the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Cubs, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Impact
Reyes was spotted warming up in the outfield prior to the nightcap, and the Cardinals confirmed him as the starter shortly after. He's appeared in just one game so far this season, fanning three in a scoreless inning Aug. 15 against the White Sox. It's unclear as to how deep Reyes can work in this one, with his last big-league start dating back to the 2018 season.
