INJURIES

Escapes with fifth save Reyes walked two batters and allowed a hit in a scoreless ninth inning Sunday, striking out one and earning a save over the Reds.
Impact Reyes worked himself into a bases-loaded jam but managed to escape without any damage. He threw just 11 of his 25 pitches for strikes, and it was his second straight outing with control issues during a save opportunity. Still, he's a perfect 5-for-5 in save chances with a 0.00 ERA through 9.1 innings.

O'Neill 2 HRs as Flaherty, Cards hand Reds 7th straight loss

Tyler O’Neill homered twice and Jack Flaherty tossed seven sharp innings as the St. Louis Cardinals beat Cincinnati 5-2

Tightropes to fourth save Reyes earned the save against Cincinnati on Friday, striking out two and walking two over two-thirds of an inning.
Impact Reyes was far from sharp in the outing, throwing only 10 of 23 pitches for strikes and walking a pair. He allowed a pair of inherited runners to score -- one on a bases-loaded walk and the other on a wild pitch. However, the right-hander did enough to extend his season-opening scoreless streak to 8.1 innings while picking up his fourth save. Reyes has treaded in dangerous waters with an 8:8 K:BB, but he has all four of the Cardinals' saves this season and looks to be locked into the closer role for the time being.

Save opportunities scarce lately Reyes, who logged a scoreless eighth inning against the Nationals in his most recent appearance Wednesday, hasn't seen a save opportunity since April 8.
Impact The hard-throwing right-hander is 3-for-3 in save opportunities and still sports an unblemished ERA through eight appearances, so he's done everything within his power to reward fantasy managers. However, the Cardinals' only three victories since Reyes' last save chance have come by 11, five and seven runs.

Draws non-save assignment Wednesday Reyes fired a scoreless ninth inning in a loss to the Nationals on Wednesday, allowing no hits and a walk with a strikeout and a wild pitch.
Impact Despite the somewhat busy final line, Reyes still threw only 16 pitches while appearing in his first game action since last Thursday. The hard-throwing right-hander carries an unblemished ERA through five appearances, three which have culminated in saves.

Records third save Reyes fired a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit while striking out one to earn his third save of the season Thursday against the Brewers.
Impact Reyes was originally designated to be a long reliever with future plans to end up in the rotation. However, he currently finds himself as the Cardinals primary closer and is handling the role very well to start the season. Reyes has immense talent, but has dealt with many injuries throughout his career. The 26-year-old has the potential to be one of the best closers this season if the Cardinals decide to keep him in that role.

Nails down second save Reyes walked one and struck out one over 1.1 scoreless innings Tuesday to secure his second save of the season in a 4-2 win over the Marlins.
Impact The right-hander has now converted both his save chances to begin the season and has yet to give up a run in 2021, but his 2:2 K:BB through 3.1 innings isn't exactly dominant. With Reyes having pitched on back-to-back days, look for Jordan Hicks or another reliever to get the call Wednesday if the Cards have a ninth-inning lead to protect.

Notches first save Reyes gave up one hit in a scoreless ninth inning Monday to record his first save of the season in a 4-1 win over the Marlins.
Impact After Jordan Hicks tossed a perfect sixth inning and Giovanny Gallegos shut down Miami in the seventh and eighth, Reyes got the call and needed 13 pitches (seven strikes) to collect the third save of his career. The 26-year-old may not have the ninth exclusively to himself in the early part of the season, especially if the Cards don't use him on back-to-back days to try and keep him healthy. but if Reyes continues to deliver results he'll make it hard for manager Mike Shildt to take him out of the closer role.

Could begin year as closer Reyes will work in the eighth and ninth innings early in the season while Jordan Hicks is eased into action, Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports.
Impact Reyes is expected to work as a long reliever for most of the 2021 campaign with the hope that he'll move to the starting rotation in 2022. However, Reyes will likely be the top option for save chances to begin the season since the Cardinals will be cautious with Hicks' usage early on after he missed the entire 2020 campaign. While Hicks should take over as the primary closer once he's fully built up, Reyes will handle ninth-inning duties to begin the year. Manager Mike Shildt said that Giovanny Gallegos and Andrew Miller could be utilized in high-leverage situations as well.

To work as long reliever in 2021 Reyes will be deployed strictly as a reliever this season with the goal of reaching 100 innings, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Impact The club plans on moving him to the rotation in 2022, assuming he holds up physically this year while working as a long reliever. Reyes has the stuff to be one of the best multi-inning relievers this year, which makes him relevant in most roto formats even if he's not regularly getting saves. Staying healthy is the big goal for the former top pitching prospect. He could vulture some wins and saves in this role, and Reyes figures to eclipse 100 strikeouts easily if he stays healthy.

Team targeting 100 innings President of baseball operations John Mozeliak said Tuesday that the Cardinals are planning on Reyes throwing around 100 innings this season if all goes well, Jeff Jones of the Bel...
Impact Reyes was once one of the top prospects in all of baseball and a potential rotation staple, but he's run into a long list of injuries in recent seasons. He debuted with 46 innings back in 2016 but has thrown just 26.2 more in the majors over the last four years. A 100-inning target for him this season indicates that he'll spend most of the year in the bullpen but could enter the rotation at some point later in the campaign. It will be tough for him to have much fantasy value as a reliever unless he can rack up holds or carve out a steady multi-inning role that allows him to accumulate strikeouts.

Dominates again Thursday Reyes fired two perfect innings in a Grapefruit League loss to the Astros on Thursday, recording three strikeouts.
Impact Reyes' second dominant outing in as many spring appearances came as his fellow competitor for the No. 5 starter role, Carlos Martinez, struggled badly to open the contest. Zachary Silver of MLB.com reports that Reyes remains receptive to any role he ultimately is assigned. "I would love to start," the right-hander said after Thursday's game. "That's what I've done as a minor leaguer, that's what I've done my whole career. Pitching in the bullpen is also fun. Our organization, we're blessed with so many talented guys, that's the fun part about spring training -- coming out here and competing. However it ends up, it ends up; all I want to do is be on that roster."

Impact The right-hander topped out at 97.8 mph during his efficient nine-pitch frame, making it a highly encouraging spring debut for a pitcher competing for the No. 5 role in the starting rotation. Reyes is competing with a pair of proven veterans in John Gant and Carlos Martinez for the job, but the 26-year-old's stuff is undeniably a cut above both.

Impact Reyes has now enjoyed two consecutive healthy offseasons, a rarity for the oft-injured hurler. The 26-year-old does have seven career starts at the big-league level, but only one has come within the last two seasons. Working almost exclusively as a reliever during the abbreviated 2020 campaign, Reyes generated a 2-1 record, 3.20 ERA and recorded 27 strikeouts across 19.2 innings. He enjoyed closing in particular -- noting "it's a lot of adrenaline" -- but Reyes also mentioned Wednesday he'd relish the opportunity to start again if called upon. If he were to open the season in the bullpen, Reyes could potentially help alleviate the workload of Jordan Hicks in the early portion of the campaign as his fellow hard-throwing right-hander works back to full strength after last pitching in June 2019.
