Gets lit up in loss Wood (2-2) took the loss Thursday, allowing six runs on four hits and four walks over 3.1 innings against the Padres. He struck out two.
Impact The Padres wasted no time in jumping all over Wood as the lefty issued walks to two of the first three batters he faced before surrendering a three-run shot to Gary Sanchez to put the Giants in an early hole. He allowed another three-run homer to Manny Machado in the third and has now allowed six runs in two of his last three starts. It marked Wood's shortest outing since May 12 against the Diamondbacks and his ERA now sits at 5.17 on the season after Thursday's disastrous start.
JUNE 23, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Wins in return from IL Wood (2-1) allowed three hits and struck out four without walking a batter over five shutout innings to earn the win Saturday over the Dodgers.
Impact Wood had a minimal stay on the injured list with a back strain. The game was close for the bulk of the time he was pitching, and he did his part by throwing 47 of 67 pitches for strikes against his former team. The Giants' offense took over from the fifth inning onward. Wood's now at a 4.11 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 34:16 K:BB through 35 innings across nine outings (eight starts). He may still need a couple more turns through the rotation to build up his pitch count. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Padres.
JUNE 18, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Reinstated from IL Wood (back) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list by the Giants on Saturday
Impact Wood comes off the injured list to make a start against the Dodgers on Saturday. The southpaw missed the minimum time on the IL with his back strain, and he returns to a 4.80 ERA and 1.60 WHIP accumulated over 30 innings and eight appearances -- seven of those starts.
JUNE 17, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Likely to return Saturday Wood (back) is likely to return from the injured list to start Saturday's game against the Dodgers, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact John Brebbia is slated to serve as the Giants' opener Friday and Logan Webb is locked in for Sunday. It should be Wood who fills the TBD in Los Angeles on Saturday, assuming there are no sudden complications with the back injury that has sidelined him since the beginning of June. He tossed three innings of one-run ball in a 53-pitch rehab start last Sunday at Triple-A Sacramento.
JUNE 15, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Could return from IL next weekend Wood (back) could return from the 15-day injured list to make a start during the Giants' series in Los Angeles versus the Dodgers next weekend, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury...
Impact Wood will make his second rehab start with Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday, and though he's expected to cover around only 50 pitches in the outing, that might be enough for the Giants to have him make his subsequent start with the big club. Whenever Wood makes his return from the IL, it would be a welcome development for a Giants squad that will be doing a bullpen day for the second straight game Sunday.
JUNE 11, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Brief IL stint expected Wood, who was placed on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a back strain, is expected to spend the minimum amount of time on the shelf, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area report...
Impact While the Giants are hopeful Wood isn't dealing with a significant injury, he has a checkered history on the health front, so fantasy managers shouldn't take it as a given that he'll back in 15 days. At the very least, the Giants will have to replace Wood in two turns through the rotation, with Jakob Junis and the newly recalled Tristan Beck looking like the most logical candidates to fill in for the veteran southpaw.
JUNE 4, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Giants place LHP Alex Wood (back) on 15-day IL The San Francisco Giants placed left-hander Alex Wood on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to a low back strain
JUNE 4, 2023 • DEADSPIN.COM
Placed on IL with back strain San Francisco placed Wood on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a back strain.
Impact It's unknown when Wood picked up the injury, as he hadn't pitched since allowing six runs in a loss to the Pirates on Wednesday. The left-hander will miss two-plus weeks with the strain, and the Giants have recalled Tristan Beck from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move. Would was scheduled to start Tuesday, so the Giants will need to make changes to the rotation, as well.
JUNE 4, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles versus Pittsburgh Wood (1-1) took the loss Wednesday, allowing six runs on eight hits and three walks across 4.1 innings during a 9-4 defeat against Pittsburgh. He struck out four.
Impact Wood allowed season highs in hits and runs allowed while suffering his first loss of the season. Since being activated off the injured list in mid-May, the left-hander has made five appearances (four starts) and holds a 6.30 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 19:10 K:BB during that stretch (20 innings). Wood's command has been shaky over his last two starts, recording eight walks and plunking two batters. He'll look to bounce back in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled for the opener of a three-game set in Colorado.
JUNE 1, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Cruises to first win Wood (1-0) picked up the win Friday in a 15-1 rout of the Brewers, allowing one run on three hits and five walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out five.
Impact The southpaw threw only 55 of 93 pitches for strikes, but he was able to avoid any significant damage from his control issues and got staked to a 10-1 lead in the third inning. It was the first time this season Wood has been able to complete five innings, and he'll take a 3.51 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 26:13 K:BB through 25.2 innings into his next outing, likely to come at home next week against the Pirates.
MAY 27, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Yields four runs Sunday Wood allowed four runs on six hits and struck out five without walking a batter over 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Marlins on Sunday.
Impact Wood didn't stretch out much more than he did in his last start, throwing 50 of 74 pitches for strikes Sunday. Jorge Soler was responsible for driving in three of the four runs against Wood, though the Giants were able to pull ahead for good in the end. The 32-year-old southpaw now has a 4.05 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 21:8 K:BB through 20 innings across six outings (five starts) this season. Wood is projected for a tough road start in Milwaukee for his next appearance.
MAY 22, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Pitches into fifth Wood did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk over 4.2 innings in a 6-3 victory over Philadelphia. He struck out four.
Impact In his first start since April 18, Wood tossed 72 pitches, his second-highest mark of the season. Wood returned from the injured list in a relief role Friday, throwing 31 pitches. As he builds up his pitch count, the lefty will have more fantasy value. After a solid outing Monday, Wood has a 2.87 ERA in 15.2 innings this season.
MAY 16, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Set to start Monday Wood will start Monday's game versus the Phillies, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
Impact Wood returned from a hamstring injury Friday and allowed a run on three hits and a walk with one strike out in one inning. Manager Gave Kapler revealed Wood was only available for one inning due to the adjustment in the Giants' pitching plans for next week. With Friday's 31-pitch outing serving essentially as an in-game bullpen session between starts, the southpaw may remain on a pitch count for Monday's game. He threw just 46 pitches over 3.2 innings in his lone rehab appearance last Sunday with Triple-A Sacramento.
MAY 13, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Activated from injured list Wood (hamstring) was activated Friday from the 15-day injured list, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports.
Impact Wood will likely serve as the bulk reliever behind opener John Brebbia on Friday night against the Diamondbacks before settling back into more of a regular rotation role next week. The left-hander threw only 46 pitches in his lone rehab start Sunday at Triple-A Sacramento. He's been out since April 19 with a left hamstring strain.
MAY 12, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Could return earlier than expected Wood (hamstring) could return to San Francisco's rotation later in the week, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports.
Impact Wood looked strong in his latest rehab appearance at Triple-A Sacramento, and he told skipper Gabe Kapler after the start that he feels ready, per Emerman. The team has yet to make anything official, but it's possible the lefty could make his return to the mound Friday in Arizona, likely bumping Ross Stripling back to a relief role.
MAY 8, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Reaches fourth frame in rehab start Wood (hamstring) covered 3.2 innings and was charged with two runs (one earned) on six hits and no walks while striking out one in his rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Sacramento.
Impact Making his first appearance at any level since April 18, Wood tossed 46 pitches (31 strikes) in the outing. The Giants presumably want to have Wood get stretched out to the 70-to-80-pitch range before bringing him back from the 15-day injured list, so he'll presumably need at least one or two more rehab starts prior to being activated.
MAY 8, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Begins rehab assignment Wood (hamstring) will begin his rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Wood has been sidelined since suffering a left hamstring strain April 18 versus the Marlins. It's unclear if he'll need more than one rehab appearance before he's cleared to rejoin the Giants' rotation. Once Wood is healthy, Ross Stripling will likely move back to the bullpen.
MAY 7, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Throws live batting practice Wood (hamstring) threw live batting practice Tuesday in Houston, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact Wood is traveling with the Giants as he nears the end of his recovery from a left hamstring strain, which was initially expected to cost him several weeks. He's less than two weeks removed from suffering the injury and could soon be cleared to head out on a minor-league rehab assignment. It all points to the 32-year-old starter being an option again for San Francisco by the middle of May.
MAY 2, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Steps back on mound Wood (hamstring) completed a bullpen session Saturday and is scheduled to throw a simulated game Tuesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Shortly after Wood was placed on the 15-day injured list April 19, manager Gabe Kapler hinted that the veteran southpaw would be headed for an extended absence, but Wood seems to be coming along quicker than anticipated in his recovery from a right hamstring strain. If he checks out fine during his upcoming simulated game, Wood could be cleared to make a rehab start in the minors as soon as next weekend. Wood will likely need only one or two rehab outings to get his arm reconditioned for starting duty, so he could be back in action for the Giants as soon as the second week of May.
APRIL 30, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Will face exctended absence Wood (hamstring) is set to miss "at least" several weeks, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact Wood was placed on the injured list Wednesday after exiting his start Tuesday. He had gotten off to a decent start early in the season, maintaining a 1.80 ERA and 1.40 WHIP with an 11:6 K:BB across 10 innings. Ross Stripling is expected to reenter the rotation in Wood's absence.

Giants place LHP Alex Wood (hamstring) on 15-day IL The San Francisco Giants placed left-hander Alex Wood on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a left hamstring strain.
APRIL 19, 2023 • NEWSOBSERVER.COM
Placed on 15-day IL Wood (hamstring) was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact Wood exited his start Tuesday versus the Marlins in the third inning after he sustained a left hamstring strain and he will now be unavailable for at least 15 days while he nurses the issue. In his place, Tristan Beck was called up from Triple-A Sacramento and will likely replace Wood in the Giants' rotation for the time being. Considering it's a relatively minor lower body injury, the left-hander doesn't seem to be in danger of a prolonged absence.
