Oakland Athletics fans boycott home opener outside stadium in protest of Las Vegas move

Many fans at the Oakland Coliseum were still hanging out in the parking lot when Alex Wood delivered the first pitch of the season for the Athletics against the Cleveland Guardians
MARCH 29, 2024 • Associated Press
Another solid showing Tuesday Wood allowed two earned runs on four hits over 4.1 innings in the Athletics' Cactus League win over the Mariners on Tuesday. He also hit two batters and recorded five strikeouts.
Impact Wood built on a solid showing in a rain-shortened outing against the Guardians on Thursday, when he allowed two runs on three hits over 2.1 innings with five strikeouts. The left-hander was able to match the latter total Tuesday while upping his workload, and although his control wasn't at its sharpest, Wood appears increasingly ready to open the regular season as the Athletics' No. 4 starter.

Improves in second spring outing Wood started the rain-shortened Cactus League matchup against the Guardians on Thursday, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk over 2.1 innings while recording five strikeouts...
Impact The game was called due to rain in the top of the third inning, but not before Wood turned in a markedly better performance than in his Cactus League debut against the Royals last Friday. The veteran southpaw had allowed three earned runs on four hits, including two homers, and a walk over two innings in that start, but Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports that Wood felt much more in command, including of the slider that he's been trying to improve, while needing just 23 pitches to record his first six outs. "I was just trying to pump the zone," Wood said. "I've been working on a few things I've been trying to get reps with. I felt good. I felt like I commanded it pretty solidly today. I'm just going to keep building up and getting ready to go."

Handles bulk assignment Wood allowed an unearned run on four hits and three walks while striking out five over 4.2 innings versus the Padres on Tuesday. He did not factor in the decision.
Impact The Giants were shut out, and John Brebbia took the loss as the opener after giving up a solo home run to Juan Soto in the first inning. Wood was better, though he still gave up an elevated number of baserunners. The veteran southpaw is now at a 4.33 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 74:42 K:BB through 97.2 innings over 29 appearances (12 starts) this year. Wood could get one more outing out of the bullpen this season, though he threw 83 pitches (54 strikes) in this appearance.
SEPTEMBER 27, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Covers five innings Wood allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out two over five innings during Tuesday's 8-4 loss to the Diamondbacks.
Impact Alex Cobb lasted two innings before his hip injury flared up again. Wood was able to provide bulk innings in relief, throwing 47 of 82 pitches for strikes. With the Giants fading in the National League playoff race, Cobb's injury comes at a bad time for the team. Wood may be a candidate to fill the gap in the rotation, either as a traditional starter or bulk reliever -- he's functioned in the latter role often this year. Wood has a 4.60 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 68:39 K:BB through 92 innings over 27 appearances (12 starts) this season. Cobb's spot in the rotation would come up Sunday against the Dodgers, but the Giants' pitching plans are likely to be up in the air until more information on the injury is available.
SEPTEMBER 20, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles in loss Wood (5-5) took the loss Wednesday, allowing five runs on five hits and one walk over 2.1 innings against the Cubs while striking out two.
Impact Wood got off to a rough start, allowing four of the first six batters to reach base in the first inning, which led to three runs coming across for Chicago. He got tagged again in the third for another two runs, marking the third the third time this season in which he's allowed at least five runs. The lefty had not allowed an earned run in five straight appearances coming in, though he's surrendered eight hits over his last two and holds an 8.44 ERA in September.
SEPTEMBER 7, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Starting Wednesday Wood will start Wednesday's game against the Cubs, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
Impact Wood has split time as a starter and a multi-inning reliever for the Giants this season, and Wednesday will mark his 12th start of the season. The 32-year-old southpaw has pitched to a 4.35 ERA and 1.43 WHIP through 80.2 innings this season, but he's given up just one unearned run in 9.1 frames across his last five appearances.
SEPTEMBER 6, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Works in relief again Sunday Wood gave up two hits and no walks without recording a strikeout across 1.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in Sunday's 4-3 win over Atlanta.
Impact The Giants appear to have officially transitioned Wood to a relief role, as the veteran southpaw has now made each of his last six appearances out of the bullpen. While Wood had been deployed as more of a bulk reliever in a few of those outings, he's made one- and 1.1-inning appearances on the last two occasions. Given that Wood is one of several bullpen options (Jakob Junis, Sean Manaea, Tristan Beck, Ryan Walker and Sean Hjelle) capable of covering multiple frames, expect the Giants to continue to get by with multiple arms on days that traditional starters Logan Webb and Alex Cobb aren't pitching.
AUGUST 21, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Mops up four innings Wood allowed three runs on six hits and struck out three without walking a batter over four innings Saturday versus the Rangers. He did not factor in the decision.
Impact Wood was initially lined up for an appearance versus the Rays on Monday, but starter Alex Cobb struggled Saturday. Wood was able to spare the rest of the Giants' bullpen with the bulk-relief outing, but he'll likely be unavailable until later in the week. Through 19 outings (11 starts), Wood has a 4.92 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 58:33 K:BB through 71.1 innings, with most of his recent work coming in a multi-inning role out of the bullpen. Given that the Giants have just two or three pitchers working as traditional starters at any given time, it remains difficult to predict when other pitchers like Wood will take the mound.
AUGUST 13, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Logs four innings Wood allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two over four innings in a no-decision versus the Angels on Tuesday.
Impact A poor opening assignment from Scott Alexander put the Giants behind early, and they never caught up. Wood was responsible for the pair of runs that helped to put the game out of reach, including Brandon Drury's solo home run in the fifth inning. Wood is now at a 4.81 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 55:33 K:BB through 67.1 innings over 18 appearances (11 starts) this season. He's projected for another outing at home versus the Rays next week.
AUGUST 9, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Likely primary pitcher Tuesday Wood is expected to serve as the Giants' primary pitcher behind opener Scott Alexander in Tuesday's game against the Angels, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Wood has made his last two appearances as a bulk reliever, tossing three scoreless innings July 26 against the Athletics and 2.2 innings of two-run ball July 31 against the Diamondbacks. Considering he'll be available on seven days' rest, Wood should be capable of handling a heavier workload than he did his previous two times out, though the Giants don't necessarily have a need for him to overextend himself with Sean Manaea and Jakob Junis both relatively fresh and available to cover multiple innings themselves, if needed.
AUGUST 8, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Fills bulk-relief role Wood allowed two runs on one hit and two walks while striking out two over 2.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Diamondbacks on Monday.
Impact For his second outing in a row, Wood worked as a de facto piggyback to Jakob Junis, who started the game with three scoreless innings. Wood has completed five innings just three times in nine outings since he returned from a back strain. The Giants have shown little interest in stretching him back out, so it appears his best path to wins will come as a bulk reliever. Wood has a 4.83 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 53:32 K:BB through 63.1 innings over 17 appearances (11 starts) this year.
AUGUST 1, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Snags win Wednesday Wood (5-4) picked up the win Wednesday over the Athletics, allowing one hit over three scoreless innings. He did not strike out or walk a batter.
Impact Wood was the fourth pitcher in the game, working as a bulk reliever for the fifth time this season. The southpaw got the job done, quieting the Athletics' bats after Jakob Junis gave up three runs in the fourth inning. Wood has alternated wildly between strong and poor outings over the last couple of months, so it's tough to trust him on a week-by-week basis. He's at a 4.75 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 51:30 K:BB through 60.2 innings this season. Assuming he stays on a regular turn, he's lined up for a difficult home outing versus the Diamondbacks next week.
JULY 27, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Set for bulk-relief role Wednesday Wood is expected to work as a bulk reliever behind opener Ryan Walker in Wednesday's game against the Athletics, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Wood will be making his fifth relief appearance of the season, as he's worked in a traditional starting role on the other 11 occasions that he's taken the hill. Walker has maxed out at three innings over 38 appearances between the majors and minors this season, so he's unlikely to work more than once through the order before turning the game over to Wood. The bulk-relief role should set Wood up better for scooping up the win than if he had been deployed as a starter.

JULY 26, 2023 • DEADSPIN.COM
Allows five runs in loss Wood (4-4) took the loss Friday after surrendering five earned runs on five hits and two walks over four-plus innings versus the Nationals. He tallied only one strikeout.
Impact Wood gave up homers to Lane Thomas and CJ Abrams within the first two innings and then was pulled from the game after yielding a leadoff single to Abrams in the bottom of the fifth. The 32-year-old left-hander has been inconsistent all year and is now showing an overall 4.99 ERA and 1.54 WHIP through 11 starts and four relief appearances. He'll aim to rebound against the Athletics on his next turn through the Giants' rotation.
JULY 22, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Goes 3.2 innings in no-decision Wood did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing a run on five hits and three walks over 3.2 innings in an 8-4 win over the Pirates. He struck out one.
Impact Wood needed 67 pitched to make it through just 3.2 innings, though he managed to hold the Pirates to just a single first-inning run while scattering five hits and three walks. The start was Wood's first since June 22, as he's been handling bulk-relief duty for the Giants of late. The 32-year-old southpaw is 4-3 this season with a 4.53 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 50:28 K:BB across 53.2 innings.
JULY 16, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Making start Sunday Wood will start for the Giants on Sunday in Pittsburgh, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Wood has been up-and-down this season while being used as a starter and bulk reliever, but he did toss five shutout frames in a bulk role his last time out. The left-hander will be making his first start since June 22.
JULY 16, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Excels in bulk role Wood (4-3) picked up the win in Saturday's 5-3 victory over the Rockies, allowing three hits and a walk over five scoreless relief innings. He struck out three.
Impact Ryan Walker lasted two innings as the opener and left with the score tied 2-2, but Wood was able to shut down the Colorado offense completely once he took the mound. The veteran southpaw tossed 47 of 72 pitches for strikes as he remained locked in an alternating pattern of great outings and poor ones -- he's flipped between winning and losing in every appearance since May 26, posting a 0.43 ERA and 0.98 WHIP in the four wins but a brutal 15.43 ERA and 2.68 WHIP in the three defeats. Wood has worked behind an opener in his last three trips to the mound, and the Giants might keep him in that bulk relief role until he shows some consistency.
JULY 9, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles with command Wood (3-3) alowed five runs (four earned) on two hits and four walks over 1.2 innings Sunday, striking out three and taking a loss against the Mets.
Impact Wood came out of the bullpen after Ross Stripling fired two shutout frames and immediately ran into trouble. The Mets plated three runs on Wood in the third inning followed by two more in the fourth. After posting a 2.87 ERA through his first five appearances, his ERA has ballooned up to 6.51 through 45 innings this year. The veteran southpaw has yet to complete six innings in any outing this season and has now made two straight appearances out of the bullpen to follow an opener. As of now, Wood's next outing is lined up to be at home against the Rockies.
JULY 3, 2023 • ROTOWIRE
Picks up third win Wood (3-2) earned the win in Tuesday's 3-0 victory over Toronto. He allowed five hits while striking out seven over five scoreless innings.
Impact After Ryan Walker pitched a scoreless first inning, Wood held the Blue Jays off the board for five innings while logging a season-high seven strikeouts to earn the win. It was an encouraging effort from the 32-year-old southpaw after he allowed six runs in two of his last three outings. Wood lowered his ERA to 4.57 with a 1.48 WHIP and 43:20 K:BB across 43.1 innings this season.
