Joins Giants Wood signed a one-year, major-league deal with the Giants on Thursday.

Impact Wood is joining his third team in as many seasons, though he spent the 2020 campaign with the Dodgers. Working primarily out of the bullpen, he posted a 6.39 ERA with 15 strikeouts and six walks across 12.2 frames. Wood will likely have the chance to compete for a rotation spot with the Giants, but should be a solid middle reliever for the club at a minimum.

Impact Wood wasn't expected to pitch deep into what was a bullpen game for the Dodgers. He did fine in the first inning, but got tagged for a three-run homer by Josh Fuentes in the second. The 29-year-old Wood now has a 6.10 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and 13 strikeouts across 10.1 innings this season. He'll likely remain in a relief role going forward.

Impact Wood is a starter by trade, though he's filled that role in just one of his six appearances so far this season. He's pitched out of the bullpen in all five of his outings since returning from a shoulder injury at the start of September and hasn't recorded more than four outs in any of them, so it would be a surprise to see him throw more than two innings in this one.

Impact Wood pitched in the eighth inning, and aside from hitting Tim Locastro with a pitch, it was a clean return to action for the 29-year-old southpaw. Wood will function in a relief role going forward, with the ability to make spot starts if necessary. He's not likely to make much of a fantasy impact working out of the bullpen.

Impact Wood has been shut down since Tuesday to allow his shoulder inflammation to subside. While a timetable for his return to game action hasn't yet been established, a better picture should come into focus once he sees how his shoulder responds to throwing. Dustin May will continue to serve as a starter in Wood's absence.

Duarte of NBC LA, Wood will not pick up a baseball for a week, so a minimum stay on the IL appears to be a longshot. With Wood out of the rotation for the time being, Dustin May figures to continue filling in as a starter.

Impact Kershaw has been dealing with back stiffness since just before Opening Day, but his progression suggests that he could be nearing a return. Impact Wood generated some offseason hype after reports that a trip to Driveline Baseball had increased his velocity. That hype should have come with the caveat that there was no reason to believe his persistent injury problems would suddenly go away. He made just one poor start this season before landing on the injured list. It's not yet clear when he's expected to return. Josh Sborz will take his place on the active roster, while Dustin May will probably now remain in the rotation even after Clayton Kershaw (back) returns from the injured list.
