Impact Puig's hopes of qualifying for the weekend were nearly dashed following a five-over 75 opening round that included four bogeys, a double bogey and just one birdie. The young Spaniard raced out to a five-under score through the first six holes Friday, but he made just one more birdie the rest of the way and was unable to make the cut despite a bogey-free, six-under 64 score. Puig was one of the best short-game players in the field at The Renaissance Club, gaining 2.77 strokes in that category. However, his struggles mainly came off the tee, losing 1.29 strokes in that category while connecting on only 12 of 26 fairways. Puig is in the field for The Open Championship next week, when he missed the cut in 2024 in his first and only appearance at golf's oldest major.
