Deion Hankins - Officially out Saturday Hankins (undisclosed) has been ruled out for Saturday's game against Bethune-Cookman, Bret Bloomquist of the El Paso Times reports.
Impact Hankins was listed as doubtful ahead of Saturday's matchup due to an undisclosed injury, so it's not very surprising to see him ruled out. Quadraiz Wadley will likely see an increased workload Saturday.

Deion Hankins - Still sidelined Wednesday Hankins (undisclosed) is present but not participating in practice Wednesday, Bret Bloomquist of the El Paso Times reports.
Impact Hankins was labeled doubtful for the season opener earlier in the week and his continued absence from practice doesn't change that narrative. Quadraiz Wadley, who rushed six times for 51 yards in the opener, could be in line for the lead role against Bethune-Cookman assuming Hankins can't go.

Impact Hankins' injury is not long-term according to Head coach Dana Dimel. With an FCS opponent on tap this Saturday in Bethune-Cookman, it is seeming more likely that Hankins may sit to make sure he is ready for the bulk of the season. Quadraiz Wadley and Ronald Awatt would be in line for more opportunities Saturday if that is the case.

Deion Hankins - Status in doubt for Saturday Hankins (undisclosed) is doubtful for Saturday's game against Bethune-Cookman, Adrian Broaddus of ESPN 600 in El Paso reports.
Impact Hankins was apparently nicked up in the season opener and UTEP may be without him as it faces an FCS opponent on Saturday. Coach Dana Dimel said that Hankins will be rested during the week and is unsure on Hankins' timetable. Ronald Awatt and Quardraiz Wadley could pick up the bulk of the rushing work should Hankins sit out.

Jacob Cowing - Has big game in opener Cowing caught five passes for 158 yards and a touchdown versus NMSU on Saturday.
Impact Even in an easy matchup, this is the way you want a player with upside to start the season. As a freshman he had 550 yards and as a sophomore he had 691 in the compressed time of 2020. Every game might not be this good for Cowing, but he is an intriguing player in a conference that offers a lot of easy matchups.

Ronald Awatt - Finds end zone Awatt rushed 11 times for 74 yards and a touchdown against NMSU on Saturday.
Impact This is a nice start to the season, but Awatt only had 42 carries for 190 yards and three touchdowns in 2020. Granted, this was after switching over from being a defensive back during a strange offseason. Nevertheless, Awatt is maybe third on the depth chart, second at best, and not every matchup is this easy.

Deion Hankins - Rushes for TD Hankins rushed 11 times for 50 yards and a score Saturday against NMSU.
Impact Last year as a redshirt freshman Hankins impressed with 592 yards and nine touchdowns on 121 carries. The expectation was that he'd be in for a bigger role in 2021. While this is not a great start, the Miners got off to an early big lead against the Aggies which probably cut into Hankins' touches. No UTEP player had more than 11 carries in this game.

Gavin Hardison - Throws TD in season opener Hardison went 11-for-16 for 249 yards, one touchdown, and one interception against NMSU on Saturday.
Impact Hardison got the nod as the starting quarterback for the Miners prior to this game, and while he wasn't that active he was largely efficient in an easy win for the Miners. UTEP actually has some weapons offensively this year, and Hardison has an easy game next week against Bethune-Cookman.
