Impact McComb beat out both Thomas Gotkowski and Caleb Heavner for the starting role for the Redhawks. McComb's dual-threat ability gave him the edge over Gotkowski, primarily a pocket passer and not known for his legs. His experience at the Division I level with Kansas gave him the advantage over Heavner, a transfer from Division II school Fort Hays. Miami (OH) will begin its season at Pittsburgh on Sept. 5.

Impact McComb opted to stay in the FBS despite entering the transfer portal, transferring from Kansas to Miami (OH). Compared to Gotkowski and Heavner, the ex-Kansas quarterback has not only trained under a Power Conference program but also a running preference. McComb would have to rely on both his speed and athleticism to win out.

Impact Given a starting role at the tail-end of Miami (OH)'s 2025 season, Gotkowski briefly stepped up during conference action, but his last two games leave questions about what his 2026 role will be. In back-to-back games, he logged under 100 yards and zero touchdowns, not fulfilling the minimum expectations of what a promising QB1. During 2025, Gotkowski logged 690 all-purpose yards (575 passing and 115 rushing) and five touchdowns, all but one of them rushing.
