Ferguson scores, Pitt defense holds on to beat UCF, 12-7

Damon Ferguson Jr. scored a touchdown and Pittsburgh’s defense held on to beat UCF 12-7 on Saturday

SEPTEMBER 13 • Associated Press

Crashes back to Earth in narrow win Heintschel completed 18 of 29 passes for 212 yards during Saturday's 12-7 win against UCF. He also had seven rushes for 13 yards.

Impact After tying a school record with seven touchdown passes against Miami (Ohio) last week, something neither Dan Marino nor Kenny Pickett were able to do at Pitt, Heintschel did next to nothing fantasy-wise, as the Panthers squeaked by the Knights. It's not surprising to see regression against a Big 12 defense, as opposed to a MAC defense, but it's a cautionary tale as to why you don't get too high, or too low, on a guy after just one game.

Lights up MAC foe, sets school record Heintschel completed 31 of 41 passes for 453 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions in Saturday's 59-14 win over Miami (Ohio).

Impact Heintschel's seven touchdown passes tied a school record, tying Pete Gonzalez (1997 vs. Rutgers). It was one more than Dan Marino, Kenny Pickett or Tom Savage ever threw in a game, too. In addition, his yardage total was the third-best single-game mark in school history. Heintschel and the Pitt offense should face a much better test when UCF comes to the Steel City next Saturday.

Returning to Pitt in 2026 Heintschel officially announced his intentions to return to Pittsburgh in 2026, per his personal X account.

Impact Heintschel took over for Eli Holstein in Week 6 and instantly secured the Panthers' QB1 gig. The true freshman was one of the more exciting gunslingers in the sport this year, and he finished the season with 2,354 yards, 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions on 63.6 percent completion, also picking up 88 yards and two scores on the ground. Though his production fell off a bit towards the end of the season, Heintchel still made it clear that he's the future of this Pitt offense, and he's now officially elected to return to the 412 next fall, where he'll be the starter from the jump.

Impact Heitschel was once again rough around the edges as Pittsburgh closed out its season with another loss in a bowl game. The freshman quarterback was a revelation for the Panthers this season when he took over for Eli Holstein in Week 6, and finished the year with 2,354 yards, 18 total touchdowns and eight interceptions on 63.6 percent completion. Still, he closed the year out with two iffy performances and still has some growing to do as he develops as a collegiate passer. Nonetheless, Heintschel has established himself as one of the better young quarterbacks in the nation and should have Pitt positioned to compete in the ACC once again in 2026.

Struggles against Miami Heintschel completed 22 of 32 passes for 199 yards, one touchdown and one interception during Saturday's 38-7 defeat versus Miami (FL). He also had seven rushes for -24 yards.

Impact The freshman quarterback has slowed up following a red-hot start to his college career. In his last three games, Heintschel is averaging 183.7 passing yards with a 3:2 TD:INT. He's also gone negative in rushing yards in back-to-back games after being a positive in the category across his first six starts. Still, he has led the Panthers to bowl eligibility, and he'll look to rebound in the postseason.
