Named starting QB for Week 1 Layne has been named New Mexico's starting quarterback for Week 1, Pete Thamel of ESPN reports.

Impact New Mexico's fall camp saw Layne and James Laubstein compete to be starting quarterback. Thamel's report indicates that the former won out their competition. Compared to Laubstein, Layne brings much more experience, albeit at a non-FBS level. Idaho's 2024 season includes his 94 completions for 1,389 yards and 12 touchdowns. While decent, he may require continual monitoring, considering his 54.7 completion percentage, 12-5 TD-INT ratio and limited run ability leave more to be desired.

Returns to practice for QB battle Layne (elbow) participated in New Mexico's first practice of fall camp, per Sean Reider of the Albuquerque Journal.

Impact Layne missed all but one spring practice with the Lobos, but he's back for fall camp while nearing 100 percent. I'm feeling really confident about where I'm at right now, and just not thinking about (it) as much. Just ripping," the quarterback said. He remains in a quarterback battle with James Laubstein for now, although New Mexico will reportedly name a starter by Aug. 18 when classes start.
