Quiet day in loss Chiles was 13-for-19 passing for 167 yards, one touchdown and one interception during Saturday's 38-7 loss versus Ohio State. He also had six rushes for negative nine yards.

Impact Chiles and the Michigan State offense proved their ability to move the ball downfield early in the game, though redzone turnovers and other mistakes gave Ohio State the opportunity to run away with the game. The sophomore quarterback found the end zone on a 12-yard strike to receiver Jaron Glover in the second quarter to cut the Ohio State lead to three points before the Buckeyes created separation. Chiles has thrown for 1,058 yards, five touchdowns and eight interceptions through Michigan State's first five games this season, adding 95 yards and three touchdowns on the ground as well. Chiles will hope to turn things around in the second half of the season, though a trip to Eugene to play Oregon will pose another difficult task on Saturday.

Multiple turnovers in loss Chiles completed 17 of 35 passes for 241 yards and three interceptions during Saturday's 23-19 loss against Boston College. He also had nine rushes for 57 yards with one touchdown.

Impact Chiles had an up-and-down performance against the Eagles, recording several awe-inspiring escapes from pressure and productive plays with his legs and arm while also throwing three interceptions and missing several wide open targets. The first-year starter has been plagued with inconsistency to start his career in East Lansing, though growing pains were certainly expected heading into the first season of the Jonathon Smith era. Chiles will face a tough task as he looks to turn things around in a home game against Ohio State on Saturday.

Finds end zone twice in blowout Chiles completed 12 of 19 passes for 173 yards and one touchdown during Saturday's 40-0 win against Prairie View A&M. He also had three rushes for eight yards with one touchdown.

Impact Chiles did what he was asked against an FCS opponent, leading the offense on multiple scoring drives while recording his first game this season without a turnover. The talented sophomore ran for a 6-yard touchdown to open the scoring in the first quarter, following it up with a 17-yard strike to Aziah Johnson to give the Spartans a 14-0 first quarter lead. Chiles and the Spartans will be tested when they travel to face a resurgent Boston College program on Saturday.

Gunslinger performance in victory Chiles completed 24 of 39 passes for 363 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions during Saturday's 27-24 victory versus Maryland. He also had eight rushes for 11 yards.

Impact Chiles let the ball fly all over the field on Saturday, accounting for several spectacular plays as well as some less-than spectacular ones. One noteworthy play came on a 77-yard touchdown strike to freshman receiver Nick Marsh in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 24 before Chiles led the team on a game-winning drive with under two minutes to play. The talented sophomore will likely continue to make big plays as well as mistakes in his inaugural season as the starter in East Lansing, with his next opportunity to shine coming in a tune-up game against Prairie View A&M on Saturday.

Struggles in team debut Chiles completed 10 of 24 passes for 114 yards and two interceptions during Friday's 16-10 victory against Florida Atlantic. He also had six rushes for 28 yards with one touchdown.

Impact Despite the poor statline, Chiles showed flashes of the hype that followed the redshirt freshman from Corvallis to East Lansing, including an 11-yard touchdown scamper in the second quarter that proved to be the game-winning score. Freshman mistakes and tendencies were present throughout the game as well, inclduing a pair of interceptions and an overall anemic offensive performance in the second half. The young quarterback will likely continue to go through ups and downs as he leads the Spartans in his first season at the helm of the offense, with his next opportunity to shine coming against Maryland on Saturday.

Michigan's QB battle among many in Big Ten that will ramp up this fall

Heavy favorite for starting job Head coach Jonathan Smith indicated Monday that it would be an "upset" if Chiles isn't starting under center for the Spartans in 2024, Matt Wenzel of MLive.com reports.

Impact This news isn't particularly surprising, given that Chiles was a highly-touted prospect out of high school, and he followed Smith from Oregon State to East Lansing. Chiles saw occasional action under center as a freshman last season in Corvallis and appeared up to the task, completing 24 of his 35 pass attempts for 309 yards and four touchdowns. He'll aim to add to his resume as the starting signal-caller for the Spartans in 2024, barring an unexpected turn of events during spring and fall practice.
