Surgery on tap Gillespie said after Villanova's 54-52 loss to Providence on Saturday that he'll undergo surgery this week to address a torn MCL in his left knee, ESPN.com reports.
Impact Gillespie missed his first game of the season Saturday after previously suffering the injury in Villanova's win over Creighton on Wednesday. The absence of Gillespie -- who ranks second on the team in scoring (14.0 points per game) and assists (4.6 per game) -- had already loomed large heading into the weekend, but the Wildcats were dealt another blow when Gillespie's primary replacement, Justin Moore, went down with what head coach Jay Wright said was a "pretty severe" ankle sprain. With Moore potentially at risk of joining Gillespie in street clothes for the rest of the season, the Wildcats will likely turn to Brandon Slater, Bryan Antoine and Chris Arcidiacono to pick up the slack at guard and on the wing. Gillespie should make a full recovery from surgery in advance of the 2021-22 season, but the senior has yet to decide whether he'll return to Villanova for a fifth year. Expect Gillespie to announce his plans once Villanova completes its postseason run.
