Payne leads Maryland against Iowa after 30-point showing

Maryland plays the Iowa Hawkeyes after Pharrel Payne scored 30 points in the Terrapins' 89-63 win over the Wagner Seahawks

DECEMBER 5, 2025 • Associated Press

Huge outing vs. Wagner Payne contributed 30 points (8-11 FG, 14-20 FT), 10 rebounds and three blocks across 29 minutes during Tuesday's 89-63 win over Wagner.

Impact Payne's 30 points were a season-high, aided by an obscene 20 free throw attempts. With 10 boards, Wagner unsurprisingly couldn't slow down the big man on the glass, and he took full advantage, stuffing the stat sheet. Stiffer competition awaits, and indeed, Maryland kicks off Big Ten play next with Iowa and Michigan on tap. Still, Payne is enjoying a career year to this point, averaging 18.9 points and 6.8 rebounds.

Posts 20 in surprisingly-quick return Payne ended with 20 points (7-8 FG, 6-10 FT), eight rebounds and one block over 27 minutes during Tuesday's 74-67 win over UNLV.

Impact Just 10 days after Payne was stretchered off the court due to a brutal-looking lower-body injury, he was back in action for the Terps. His mere presence was impressive in its own right, but he then proceeded to post his third 20-point game and second-best rebounding effort of the season. He has another tough task Tuesday in the Players Era Festival, as Maryland is set for a late-night showing against a Gonzaga team that handily defeated a top-10 Alabama squad Monday night.

Cleared for Players Era Festival Payne (lower body) isn't listed on Maryland's availability report for Monday's game against UNLV.

Impact Payne endured a scary fall Nov. 15 against Marquette and had to be stretchered off the floor. Despite the optics of the injury, Payne will be back in action after merely a one-game absence. The star forward averaged 20.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in three full games before the Marquette game.

Not playing vs. Mount St. Mary's Payne (lower body) isn't available for Maryland against Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday, per Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.

Impact Payne was stretchered off the court in Maryland's win over Marquette, and the big man will unsurprisingly miss the Terps' next game. The forward, who's averaging 18.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists this season, will get his next chance to play against UNLV or Gonzaga on Nov. 25.

Stretchered off court Payne was stretchered off the court Saturday against Marquette after sustaining an apparent lower body injury, Ashley Washburn of TMJ4 reports.

Impact Payne had his legs slip out from underneath him while coming down from a dunk and hit the hardwood awkwardly. The senior required a stretcher to exit the court. With the center out for at least the remainder of Saturday's contest, Elijah Saunders, Aleks Alston and Collin Metcalf could see more action.

Big games early for Maryland Payne provided 22 points (8-10 FG, 6-8 FT) and seven rebounds over 30 minutes during Tuesday's 84-64 win over Alcorn State.

Impact The senior transfer from Texas A&M has established himself as the go-to option for a rebuilding Terps program, as he's leading the team in scoring (20.0 ppg) and rebounding (8.0 rpg) through three contests. He recorded a double-double in a loss to Georgetown last Friday and has 20-plus points in both matchups against mid-major opponents. Payne and the Terps get another resume-building opportunity this Saturday on the road against Marquette.

Leading scorer in win Payne finished Monday's 83-61 victory over Coppin State with 21 points (6-8 FG, 9-9 FT), six rebounds, two assists and one steal in 28 minutes.

Impact Payne was Maryland's top scorer in the onset of the Buzz Williams era in College Park. The Texas A&M transfer scored an efficient 21 points on eight shots, and was perfect from the charity stripe. With Payne and Elijah Saunders, the Terps' offense could run through the post more often than not this season, which would obviously bode well for Payne's production.
