Nebraska's first March Madness appearance in 10 years earns Hoiberg a contract extension
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg has received a two-year contract extension through the 2028-29 season and a raise to $4.25 million annually beginning April 1, interim athletic director Dennis Leblanc announced Wednesday.
Hoiberg led the Cornhuskers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2014. They are a No. 8 seed and play Texas A&M in Memphis, Tennessee, on Friday.
The Huskers (23-10) have their second-most wins in program history, and their third-place finish in the Big Ten was their best conference finish since they tied for second in the Big Eight in 1993.
Hoiberg had been scheduled to earn $3.5 million next season under his previous contract.
“I’m appreciative of the confidence our administration has shown in our staff’s leadership of the Husker basketball program,” Hoiberg said. “With our history at the University of Nebraska, this is a special place for our family. We want to continue to build a program that our fans can embrace and one that represents the values of Nebraskans.
"With the phenomenal facilities and fan support in place, we are positioned to do things that have never been accomplished by the Husker men’s basketball program.”
Hoiberg was born in Lincoln and his grandfather, Jerry Bush, coached the Huskers from 1954-63.
The Huskers were 24-67 his first three seasons, and he took a pay cut before the 2022-23 season. Nebraska was 16-16 last season, finishing with wins in six of nine games. The Huskers' 29-13 record since February 2023 is third-best in the Big Ten.
Nebraska is the only Power Five program to have never won a game in the NCAA Tournament.
