Sage Northcutt was not cool with Mickey Gall cursing so much on TV
Welterweight prospect Mickey Gall thrashed CM Punk two weeks ago in their UFC 203 bout, and afterwards, used his post-fight interview to call out fellow “Dana White: Lookin’ for a Fight” star Sage Northcutt.
"This might sound like a gimmicky fight but I’m no gimmick. I'm for real. I'm not going (expletive) anywhere," Gall said after the victory.
“I want “Super” Sage Northcutt next. I think that kid’s corny. I’m going to punch the spikes out of his hair … Hey, they say we’re ‘Dana White: Lookin’ for a Fight’ young guns, let us bang out. They say guys like us [want] the protection -- (expletive) that, I want war!”
Northcutt knows that call outs are simply part of the fight game, but the lightweight wishes Gall would at least watch his language when doing so. There are children in the room, man.
"I think a step too far was when he's cussing and sending the curse words out there," Northcutt said on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani. "I don't know. He said that's how he gets people's attention, but I don't know what people's attention he's trying to get if he's cussing out there. Is it the families? The moms? The little kids that are watching? I don't know, but it doesn't seem very appropriate."
Northcutt has quickly developed a reputation as one of the UFC’s more polite and well-mannered fighters, as the 20-year-old is often heard calling reporters “ma’am” and “sir” during media scrums. Most who have met Northcutt will attest that his perky personality isn’t an act.
However, what he lacks in aggression outside of the Octagon, he makes up for on fight night. The Texas native scored rousing finishes in his first two UFC fights and has won three UFC before his 21st birthday. And he’s considering making Gall the fourth.
Northcutt told Helwani that as soon as Gall called him out, his team reached out to the UFC to say they want the fight. Nothing is set in stone yet, but he anticipates it happening sometime in December at welterweight.
Regardless of date, time and weight, Northcutt is confident he’ll get the job done against Gall when they face off.
"All I could say is that I believe I have better grappling than him and better stand up," Northcutt said. "If I go out there, I can take the fight wherever I want. If I want to go out there and stand up with him and knock him out, I believe I can do that. If I want to take him down and submit him, I believe I can do that also."
