Hector Lombard wants Nick Diaz next, but will settle for Patrick Cote

Diaz or ... Cote? Interesting choices, Mr. Lombard.

One month removed from his UFC 171 win, Hector Lombard is craving his next fight booking. Right now, nothing solid is on the table for the No. 6 ranked welterweight, but he has his own ideas.

According to UFC Tonight’s Ariel Helwani, Lombard is hopeful of a matchup with Nick Diaz, the semi-retired lightning rod who has made noise about a possible return. Diaz though, has repeatedly said he’d only come back for a title shot or a guaranteed $500,000 payday, and though Dana White is on the record as saying he’s interested in the fight, it may not happen under those financial terms.

Now, here’s where things get interesting. Lombard told Helwani that he’s not too keen on waiting on Diaz, so his alternate plan is Patrick Cote at UFC 175.

Cote has won both of his fights since moving to welterweight, but he’s currently unranked, making it a bit of an unusual fight request.

Wouldn’t literally anyone else on the top 15 list make more sense than Cote? We’re sure Lombard has his reasons, we’re just unclear of what they are.

Even more unusual? Cote is apparently not interested. A win over Lombard would no doubt rocket Cote up the rankings, but the Canadian told Helwani that he has other plans.
