Crushing defeat in Sydney Elliott lost to Jonathan Micallef via technical submission (rear-naked choke) at 3:21 of Round 2 at UFC 325 on Saturday in Sydney, Australia.

Impact Elliott needed a strong performance following his unanimous decision loss to Seok Hyun Ko as a -500 favorite last June. He was the more effective fighter for most of this bout, using his speed and aggressiveness to keep Micallef off balance, but he allowed one takedown midway through Round 2 and was never able to recover. Micallef easily transitioned to the rear-naked choke and Oban went to sleep as opposed to tapping out. The 28-year-old will probably get another opportunity with the UFC given the fact he won his first three fights with the company, but he's likely one more setback away from getting cut.

Impact The two were set to throw down at UFC Perth back in September, but Elliott was forced to withdraw due to illness. Now, the Welsh Ganger will get a chance to bounce back from his first ever UFC loss back in June. He'll give up five inches in reach to Micallef, who also has the edge in volume striking (albeit over a two-fight sample size).

Impact Elliott entering as a -500 favorite is certainly going to be in the running for worst line of the year when all is said and done. He gave up six takedowns and 10:15 worth of control time to Ko, an opponent known for his striking as opposed to his grappling game. Elliott landed just 10 significant strikes in 15 minutes and failed on both of his takedown attempts. It was a truly abysmal performance from start to finish. Oban had built up some good will after winning each of his first three UFC bouts, but much of that is gone following this effort.

Impact At UFC Vegas 107, Elliott and Ko were scheduled to fight Ramiz Brahimaj and Billy Goff respectively. However, both members of the former duo had to withdraw. It seems they are good to go a month down the line, as the UFC ultimately decided to pencil both Elliott and Ko against each other for Azerbaijan. Elliott's new opponent is a promotion newcomer.
