Dana White fires back at UFC 209 criticism on social media
All UFC president Dana White wanted to do last night was celebrate the Boston Celtics’ 99-86 win over the Golden State Warriors. He instead found himself responding to fans critical of last weekend’s UFC event.
White re-posted a picture of point guard Isiah Thomas from the official Celtics account with the caption “F*ck Ya.” Most of the comments were fans returning the favor and telling White just how much the Celtics suck, but one comment, in particular, got Dana’s attention: a harsh critique of UFC 209.
Sick of people calling the PPV trash, White decided to put everyone on notice on what’s in store for them if they keep complaining, a meeting with heavyweight Derrick Lewis.
“The fights last weeks were AMAZING. The main event was not. Give respect to the people who fought their ass [off] or I will send Derrick Lewis to [your] house.” White wrote on Instagram.
The UFC 209 main card saw two highlight reel finishes and an all-action fight between Lando Vannata and David Teymur before Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson underwhelmed in the main event. White isn’t keen on letting the one fight spoil the entire card, though.
White’s comment sparked an influx of additional comments, which included the obvious haters but also plenty of love from diehard UFC fans. And the big boss was appreciative.
White’s relatability and willingness to engage with fans -- sometimes good, sometimes bad -- is one of the things that separates him from the heads of other pro sports leagues.
