Robin Haase awesomely screams mid-point to mock over-grunting opponent
Oh man, that's gold. It's like the episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm where everybody started loudly cursing to cover for the chef who couldn't help himself, except this was borne out of ill will, not sympathy. For Haase, unfortunately, it was a lesson taught in defeat, as Lama went on to win 6-3, 6-3.
So why did he lose the point? Because he was deemed to have yelled intentionally which - yeah, obviously. But why is one exaggerated grunt okay and the other not? Because the rules for deliberate hindrance (the kind where you lose a point) are so vague that it's completely up the umpire's discretion. And since tennis doesn't want to open the Pandora's Box of deciding what kind of grunting is allowed and what isn't, we're stuck with dudes legally hitting a lob forehand and sounding like they're squatting 900 pounds, while the guys that make fun of them are penalized for their heroism.
While we're on funny moments from Challengers, I want you to watch this next video, from last week, without any context. Just watch the player at the bottom of your screen.
Maybe you've noticed, maybe you haven't. If not, watch it again and look at the score. That was the second point of the match. Oh man, I die of laughter every time I see it.
