Partizan beats Anderlecht to reach Champs League
Partizan Belgrade beat Anderlecht by 3-2 in a penalty shootout to qualify for the Champions League on Tuesday.
The match was tied 2-2 after regular and extra time. Their first-leg match in Belgrade last week also ended 2-2.
Anderlecht was undone in the shootout by the poor state of its pitch. The turf gave way under the penalty spot several times, leading to three of Anderlecht's five kicks sailing high over the bar, including the crucial last penalty by midfielder Mbarak Boussoufa.
The Serbian champions, aiming to reach their first Champions League since 2003 when they were coached by Germany great Lothar Matthaeus, went ahead in the 15th minute when Cleo scored on a header from a corner kick, beating Anderlecht defender Ondrey Mazuch on the 5-meter line.
Partizan playmaker Sasa Ilic had to leave the pitch soon after with an injury.
Cleo added his second in the 53rd after he controlled with his chest a long-range cross and fired the ball which jumped awkwardly and ended in the far side of the net.
But Partizan wasted the 2-0 lead, retreating into defense and allowing Anderlecht to control most of the second half and much of extra time with its midfielder Boussoufa particularly influential.
''We played bravely, we never lost hope even when we lost the 2-0 lead, we tried to attack and it paid off,'' said Partizan coach Aleksandar Stanojevic. ''We don't want to be just participants in the Champions League, we want to be a tough opponent for any team.''
In a dramatic comeback, the Belgian champions rallied on goals by Romelu Lukaku and Guillaume Gillet.
Anderlecht pulled the first one back in the 64th, when the 17-year old Lukaku - who is being tracked by Real Madrid and Chelsea - slotted the ball past Ilic after he was left unguarded in the penalty area.
Soon after, Partizan's Ivica Iliev wasted the best opportunity of the match when he was one-on-one with Anderlecht goalie Silvio Proto, who made a spectacular save.
Gillet, the Anderlecht defender who had scored in the first match in Belgrade, equalized in the 71st with a blistering volley from some 20 meters which slammed in under the bar.
