America, Morelia reach Mexican playoffs

America and Morelia have advanced to the post-season playoffs in Mexico's first division, joining Tigres, Santos Laguna and Monterrey in the eight-team series.

America defeated Santos Laguna 3-1 and Morelia beat Pachuca 2-1 with two rounds remaining in the Clausura - the second half of Mexico's split season. The playoffs begin May 2.

In other results, defending champion Tigres came from behind to defeat eight-man Chivas 2-1, Cruz Azul beat Toluca 3-0, Pumas defeated Atlante 2-1, Jaguares and Tijuana drew 0-0, Queretaro drew 2-2 with San Luis, Atlas defeated Monterrey 1-0, and Estudiantes Tecos drew 1-1 against Pubela.

The draw relegated Estudiantes from the first division.

The race for the three remaining playoff berths is between Tijuana, Pachuca, Cruz Azul, Jaguares, Toluca and Atlas.

America defeated Santos Laguna 3-1, courtesy of two goals from Christian Bermudez. He struck in the 38th and 70th minutes, either side of Carlos Ochoa's equalizer just before halftime, before Vicente Matias sealed the win in the 77th.

Gerardo Lugo scored Morelia's winner in the 78th mminute. Rafael Marquez gave Morelia the lead in the 20th and Maro Bueno leveled for Pachuca in the 72nd.

Brazilian Juninho scored an injury-time winner as Tigres extended its unbeaten run at home to 26 games. Chivas finished with eight men after Erick Torres was sent off in the first half, Marco Fabian in the second and Jesus Sanchez after the winning goal for something he said to the referee. Omar Arellano had given Chivas the lead in the 22nd with Carlos Salcido equalizing in the 71st.

Christian Gimenez, Alejandro Vela and Javier Orozco scored the goals in Cruz Azul's victory.

Carlos Orrantia got the winner for Pumas in the 72nd. An own-goal from Ricardo Jimenez put Pumas in the lead in the eighth minute, with Ezequiel Cuevas scoring for Atlante two minutes later.

Alberto Garcia equalized three minutes from the end to give Queretaro the 2-2 draw against San Luis. Alfredo Moreno scored for San Luis in the 41st with Isaac Romo equalizing three minutes after halftime. Fadundo Pereyra briefly restored San Luis' lead in the 83rd.

Atlas' six-game scoring drought came to an end against Monterrey, with Hugo Rodriguez heading in from a corner in the 38th.

Guadalajara's Estudiantes Tecos fell behind in the seventh minute with Lucas Silva scoring for Puebla. Argentine Rubens Sambueza got the equalizer in the 88th.
