Texas A&M AD says Kevin Sumlin 'has to win this year'
Kevin Sumlin’s seat is very warm.
The Texas A&M head coach was a hot commodity after his first season in College Station in 2012 when he guided the Aggies to an 11-2 finish with Johnny Manziel winning the Heisman Trophy.
Sumlin’s seasons have been mediocre since, and more is expected in Aggieland.
"Coach knows he has to win, and he has to win this year“ Texas A&M athletic director Scott Woodward said on The Paul Finebaum Show. “And we have to do better than we've done in the past."
Sumlin has gone 8-5 in each of the last three seasons. But the Aggies haven’t finished with an above 500 conference record since 2012 in arguably the toughest division in college football.
“Last year was extremely disappointing,” Woodward said. “We were as highly ranked as four and got up there and played very competitive games and fell off, like we’ve been doing.”
"Fell off" is referring to Texas A&M’s recent string of late-season collapses. From 2013-16, the Aggies started the season a combined 21-1, but finished 12-16.
The 2017-18 season begins with a tough road test at UCLA on Sept. 3.
“I have all the confidence that coach is going to get it done in a very convincing way,” Woodward said.
