Serious injury overshadows Marquette win

The atmosphere inside the Bradley Center drew eerily quiet seven minutes into the second half of Marquette's game on Tuesday night.

Senior forward Joseph Fulce had crashed to the floor, screaming in agony. Marquette's medical staff rushed onto the floor to assist, but Fulce's reaction every time his knee was touched put a hush over the crowd.

Team athletic trainer Ernest Eugene attempted to turn Fulce onto his back, which was met with the 23-year-old yelling out, "No, don't touch it."

After the game, head coach Buzz Williams was in a hurry to get through his postgame press conference so he could drive to the hospital to check on Fulce's condition.

"He's got a shot knee," Williams said. "It's been shot. I would say it's completely shot."

Marquette was in control of the game, leading 58-30, when Fulce went down.

For the final 13 minutes of play, the players said it was difficult to focus on the game knowing what their teammate was going through.

"When I knew it was his same knee that he just came back from, I knew it was serious," junior Jae Crowder said. "The screaming that I heard and everybody else heard really shut me down from that point."

Fulce has been battling with knee issues for several years and had missed Marquette's previous four games due to a knee injury.

Despite improving to 7-2 on the year and dominating the visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders, the win became an afterthought.
