Running the ball pays off for Cincinnati

The Bengals proved Sunday during their 34-20 upset win over San Diego at Paul Brown Stadium that good things come to those who run.

The Bengals ran the ball a season-high 38 times against the No. 1-ranked Chargers defense. And even though they managed just 102 yards on the ground because of a meager 2.7 yards-per-carry average, the Bengals kept pounding the ball into the San Diego line, which kept defenders in the box, enabling the passing game to flourish under the direction of quarterback Carson Palmer.

While sticking to their guns, the Bengals ensured their ability to carry out the run-based plan by splitting the load between Cedric Benson and Bernard Scott. Benson was the workhorse, with 24 carries for 52 yards. Scott's change-of-pace speed enabled him to scoot for 50 yards on 11 carries, including a 10-yard touchdown run.
