Royals announce 2016 spring training schedule

If you're like us, you flat-out can't wait until the Kansas City Royals -- your World Series champion Kansas City Royals -- start playing ball again.

Well, now you have a date to mark on the calendar: March 2.

The Royals announced their 2016 spring training schedule today, and the boys will open their 14th Cactus League season against their Surprise complex mates, the Texas Rangers, on Wednesday, March 2.

The Royals will play 34 spring games, including 16 at Surprise Stadium (15 as the home team, one as the visitor against Texas). The first six home games will start at 2:05 p.m. CT, and the rest will start at 3:05 p.m. CT after Daylight Savings Time kicks in March 12.

Other highlights include a two-game series against the Rangers at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, on March 18 and 19. The Royals will conclude the spring schedule with a two-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on April 1 and 2.

The Royals open Major League Baseball's regular season on Sunday, April 3, against their 2015 World Series opponent, the New York Mets.

Pitchers and catchers will report to Surprise on Thursday, Feb. 18. Workouts for pitchers begin the following day. The remainder of the squad will report Feb. 22 and begin workouts Feb. 23.
