Rivers wins Western Conference coach of month after leading Clippers on 7-game win streak

Doc Rivers had a good chuckle about his latest honor, just because he hadn't heard of it before.

Rivers was named Coach of the Month in the NBA's Western Conference. The Los Angeles Clippers' head coach guided his team to a perfect 7-0 record in April.

"(Vice president of communications) Seth (Burton) said, 'hey, you won coach of the month.' It was like, 'what?' I was shocked, No. 1," Rivers said with a laugh. "No. 2, I think they give you this plaque, and I think Stevens and I are going to saw it in half. It's always nice whenever you win anything."

Interestingly enough, Celtics coach Stevens won Eastern Conference coach of the month honors. Rivers guided the Celtics to the 2008 NBA title.

Rivers becomes the third coach in Clippers franchise history to win the award. Vinny Del Negro won in 2012 and Larry Brown in 1992.

During the Clippers seven-game win streak, they've averaged 108.6 points per game and allowed just 97.4, and the +11.2 points per game differential was the second-highest in the NBA.

The Clippers -- who earned the No. 3 seed for the postseason -- will play No. 6 seed San Antonio in the first round, and Game 1 is Sunday at Staples Center.

The Clippers have won 14 of their last 15 games.
