Packers allow Crockett, Elliott, Tripp to be unrestricted free agents
With the new NFL beginning Thursday, the Green Bay Packers did not make a qualifying offer to three of their own free agents -- running back John Crockett and linebackers Jayronne Elliot and Jordan Tripp -- making all three unrestricted free agents.
Elliott, who was a restricted free agent, might be the biggest surprise. While he didn't make a start for the Packers, he did play in 11 games with 136 defensive snaps and was a key special teams contributor. In three seasons with the Packers, Elliott appeared in 38 games with 57 tackles.
Crockett signed as an undrafted free agent in 2015 and played in two games for Green Bay, rushing nine times for 21 yards. He spent the 2016 season on injured reserve. Crockett had been an exclusive-rights free agent.
Tripp was signed by the Packers on Dec. 14 after he was waived with an injury settlement by Seattle. In two games with Green Bay, Tripp, who was a restricted free agent, played solely on special teams and had one tackle.
