Mizzou LB Scherer named to Butkus Award watch list

It wasn't the Mizzou defense's fault that the Tigers fell to 5-7 last season. And it sure wasn't Michael Scherer's fault.

The folks at the Butkus Foundation apparently realized that when they named the senior linebacker to the Butkus Award Preseason Watch List, as announced Tuesday morning. The Butkus Award honors the nation's top linebacker.

Scherer has been one of the top-producing linebackers in the Southeastern Conference over the last two seasons, tallying at least 90 tackles in each as a leader on one of the nation's top defenses. He had 93 tackles (47 solo) last season, which ranked 11th in the SEC and eighth among non-seniors. Nine of his tackles went for a loss and he had a fumble recovery, two quarterback hurries and three pass breakups.

This is the second time that Scherer has been on the preseason Butkus watch list. He earned a spot a year ago after a 2014 season in which he finished second on the team with 114 tackles for the SEC East champion Tigers.
