A vicious fight broke out at one of Britain's most prestigious race meetings Thursday, with men using table legs and champagne bottles as weapons as they battled in front of stunned onlookers.

The Queen and the Duchess of Cambridge's parents were at Ladies' Day at Royal Ascot in Berkshire but were well clear of the full-scale brawl which involved at least five men, Sky News reported.

One man wearing a tie was seen to swing a table leg at a foe on the ground, while another grabbed a $158 Laurent Perrier Rose Champagne bottle to use as a weapon.

Another was held in a headlock as the fighting flared around a champagne bar more used to being a place to trade tips than swap punches.

At least two men fled into the crowd to avoid being apprehended by course security officials. No one was arrested after the fracas, which was believed to have started over a young blonde woman.

Police revealed that one man ended up with a head gash during the melee.

Despite the violence, the famous faces at the course were able to enjoy the day's races unhindered, including Carole and Michael Middleton, who took part in a traditional horse-drawn carriage procession for the first time.

Their carriage followed the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the royal family.

Royal Ascot, which takes place at Ascot Racecourse each year, is one of Europe's most famous race meetings and dates back to 1711 when it was founded by Queen Anne.
