Jacksonville approves $90M in stadium upgrades for Jaguars
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- The Jacksonville City Council has approved a $90 million project to upgrade EverBank Field.
The council voted 19-0 Tuesday to move forward with plans to renovate club seating inside the stadium and build a state-of-the-art indoor practice facility as well as a 5,000-seat amphitheater on the property.
Jaguars owner Shad Khan and the city will split costs, with the city's portion coming from funds identified solely for use at the sports complex.
Construction is scheduled to begin in January following the TaxSlayer Bowl. Completion of the club renovations is expected to be done before the Jaguars' first preseason game. The amphitheater and indoor practice facility are scheduled to be done early next fall.
"We have worked diligently over the years to improve EverBank Field, in every respect, to make it one of the best stadiums in the NFL for the Jaguars and our fans, and to enhance the entire sports complex so we are an undisputed destination for world-class sports and entertainment events," Khan said in a statement. "Today's news is a major step forward in our continuing effort to establish Jacksonville as the best of the best. "
The project is designed to bring more people to downtown Jacksonville and possibly enhance future bids for College Football Playoff games and other major sporting events.
