Gallo trying to move past huge opener with Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas -- If you need more proof that Texas Rangers third baseman isn't your typical rookie, all you need to know is who he heard from after his historic major-league debut Tuesday night.

Washington Nationals slugger Bryce Harper talked with Joey Gallo. So did Chicago Cubs phenom Kris Bryant. And of course he got a text from his mentor, former American League most valuable player Jason Giambi.

But Gallo has turned the page on his three-hit debut that included a homer into the upper deck in right. That's all he can do.

"Baseball is pretty humbling," he said. "Last night was last night and now today is another day. Hopefully our team does the same thing. We played great (a 15-2 win) last night."

One thing Gallo can't escape is people's desire to come up with a nickname for Gallo, who set a franchise record with his four RBI in his debut.

He's fine with that and is open to suggestions.

"I haven't had a nickname," he said. "Let's see if someone can come up with something good for me."

All the attention caught Gallo off guard despite the fact he's one of the top power-hitting prospects in baseball.

"It kind of blew up quicker than I thought," he said. "It's okay. I'm trying not to pay attention to that. Just live in the moment and I'm in the clubhouse with Prince Fielder and Adrian Beltre so I'm not that big of a deal."
