Ferguson to transfer from Marquette

MILWAUKEE -- Marquette guard Jamal Ferguson has been granted his release and will transfer from the program, the school announced Tuesday.
Ferguson appeared in 14 games during his freshman season at Marquette, averaging 1.1 points and 0.6 rebounds in just 4.6 minutes per game. 
"Jamal has decided it is in the best interest of his future that he leave the team," Marquette coach Buzz Williams said in a release. "He has our complete support, and we wish him nothing but the best and are very appreciative of his contributions while he was here."
Playing time would have been hard to come by for Ferguson in his sophomore season, as Marquette likely will return Vander Blue, Todd Mayo and Derrick Wilson at the guard position and bring in highly regarded guard recruits in Duane Wilson, Jajuan Johnson and John Dawson. 
The Norfolk, Va., native was a three-star recruit by Scout.com and was ranked as the 30th best shooting guard in the class of 2012. 
"I am hoping to find a school closer to my family, who are very important to me," Ferguson said. "I would also like to obviously find a situation where I can have more playing time on the court."
Ferguson is the second player to transfer from Marquette this offseason, as guard Jake Thomas announced his intention to play his final season of college basketball elsewhere.
The Golden Eagles would have been one over the scholarship limit if everyone returned, but Ferguson's departure frees up the scholarship needed. Thomas was slated to return to walk-on status after being on scholarship the past two seasons because an extra one was available.
