Fantasy Football Starts and Sits for Week 3 in 2014

Starts:

QB – Russell Wilson, SEA

The Broncos have allowed the second-most fantasy points to the opposing quarterback after the first two weeks (21.55 points). We all saw what Wilson did to the Denver defense at the Super Bowl (206 passing yards, 2 TDs). While the Broncos upgraded in the offseason, this game will be played in Seattle where the Seahawks own the advantage and the fans are always a factor.

Other notables: Jay Cutler (CHI), Ryan Tannehill (MIA), and Kirk Cousins (WSH)

RB – Lamar Miller, MIA

Knowshon Moreno will likely miss a month of action after dislocating his elbow last Sunday. This could be the chance Miller needs to solidify his role in the Dolphins’ backfield. Now, it won’t be easy. The Chiefs haven’t allowed a rushing touchdown yet. Shonn Greene’s 71 rushing yards in Week 1 is still the best stat line for a RB against Kansas City this season. However, if Miller wants this starting job when Moreno returns, he’ll need to show what he can do against the good defenses like KC.

Other notables: Bobby Rainey (TB), Ahmad Bradshaw (IND), and Stevan Ridley (NE)

WR – Cordarrelle Patterson, MIN

The top receiver for the Vikings is likely to record at least six receptions against the Saints. In Week 1, Julio Jones caught seven passes, while his teammates Roddy White and Devin Hester both caught five balls. The following week, Miles Austin and Andrew Hawkins both caught six passes against the New Orleans defense. So, pencil in Patterson for six catches and probably a touchdown, as well.

TE – Coby Fleener, IND

When looking at the teams that allow the most points to opposing tight ends, Indianapolis is number one. However, they had to deal with Julius Thomas and the Broncos in Week 1. Second on the list is Dallas. While Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker torched the Cowboys for an average of 18.3 fantasy points per game, the Rams just don’t have a TE, or offense, of those caliber players mentioned before them. That brings us to Jacksonville. In the first week of the season, Zach Ertz caught three passes for 77 yards and a TD. In Week 2, Niles Paul caught eight balls for 99 yards and a TD. Though the tight end spot for the Colts doesn’t have a solid No. 1 guy, I’m choosing the TE with the most targets thus far. Just pray that Jack Doyle doesn’t air-vulture another touchdown.

Sits:

QB – Alex Smith, KC

So far, the Dolphins’ defense has kept opposing quarterbacks in check. Last week, EJ Manuel threw for 202 yards and one touchdown. In the season opener, Tom Brady was only able to muster 10.26 fantasy points against Miami.

Other notables: Derek Carr (OAK), Brian Hoyer (CLE), and Andy Dalton (CIN)

RB – Donald Brown, SD

Surprise, Ryan Mathews is out 4-5 weeks. That means Brown is the likely recipient of the carries in San Diego. While that may seem like a good thing for Brown, and his fantasy owners, the Bills have yet to yield a rushing TD. Matt Forte rushed for 82 yards in Week 1, but couldn’t find the end zone. Lamar Miller was held to 46 rushing yards and 5.3 fantasy points in Week 2.

Other notables: Terrance West (CLE) and Isaiah Crowell (CLE)

WR – Rams receivers, STL

The Cowboys are the lone team remaining that hasn’t allowed a touchdown to an opposing wide receiver this season. In Week 1, though Vernon Davis scored two TDs, San Francisco’s receivers only recorded 12 catches for 157 yards. Last week, Delanie Walker had a big game, but the Titans WRs only had seven receptions for fewer than 100 yards.

Other notables: Rod Streater (OAK), Allen Hurns (JAC), and Kelvin Benjamin (CAR)

TE – Jordan Cameron, CLE

Seven NFL teams have allowed fewer than five fantasy points per game to the opposing tight end (standard league, not PPR), the Ravens are one of them. So far, Tyler Eifert (three catches, 37 yards) and Heath Miller (four catches, 35 yards) have been stalled by Baltimore. Cameron is battling through a shoulder injury and, even if he plays on Sunday, I don’t expect him to contribute much in the game plan.
