England bowls SA out for 214 to take 89-run lead in 1st test
DURBAN, South Africa (AP) England bowled South Africa out for 214 for an 89-run lead in the first test on Monday, striking a blow early in its series against the top-ranked team.
Stuart Broad dismissed Temba Bavuma second ball of the day to again set the tone for the England bowling attack at Kingsmead.
England's bowlers conceded just 77 more runs in taking the last six South African wickets on the third day, enhancing the pre-series suggestions that South Africa's position as the No. 1 team in test cricket could be vulnerable in this four-match contest.
Broad finished with 4-25 to ably lead the England bowling lineup, which was missing the injured James Anderson, England's leading wicket-taker.
Spinner Moeen Ali was also an important factor in Durban with 4-69.
Opener Dean Elgar made 118 not out, but that didn't disguise the current struggles of the South African batting lineup. It was the first century by a South African in seven tests.
As on the second day, Broad struck with his second delivery when Bavuma chopped a wide delivery onto his own stumps to go for 10 and without adding to South Africa's overnight score of 137-4.
Offspinner Ali removed JP Duminy (2) and Kyle Abbott (0) to catches to England's close fielders. The slow bowler also ended Dale Steyn's eighth-wicket stand with Elgar, which contributed 54 of South Africa's 77 runs on Monday and was the Proteas' second-best partnership behind Elgar's stand with AB de Villiers on Sunday.
Facing a constantly testing combination of Broad, Steven Finn and Moeen Ali, the rest of South Africa's batsmen failed.
And without Elgar's fourth test century, it would have been much worse for the leading test side, which was under more pressure following a comprehensive 3-0 series defeat in India.
While Broad was outstanding, Finn got deserved reward with two wickets in four balls just before lunch to wrap up South Africa's tail.
