DraftKings MLB Picks For September 13

We have a full slate tonight in DraftKings, on a Monday! We only have four pitchers that are priced over $10,000. However, we do have 11 that top $7,500. Should we pay for two aces? We have plenty of chances. Should we punt all of the top pitchers and pay for hitting? Let’s check the past stats for some help.

NOTE: these picks are based solely on statistics. Some players have never faced their opponents, or have very little experience against them. I am not saying that none of those are good picks. The highest scorer of the day could be someone with no experience against his opponent. This is based on statistical analysis only. If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science. The best lineups usually have a mix of proven stats and hot players. Check out this post from Matt McGarvey for great tips about whether to use a hot player in DFS or not.

A.J. Cole was brilliant against the Mets on September 2nd. He gave up just one run one three hits and two walks while striking out five in six innings.

Jharel Cotton was outstanding in his major league debut, giving up only one run on two hits and two walks over 6.1 innings against the Angels. The downside is that he only struck out three. He struck out well over a batter per inning at AAA this year, but don’t expect that against the Royals tonight. They still don’t strike out much, but Cotton’s $6,800 price tag is tempting.

Alec Asher dominated the Nationals in his major league debut, allowing only two hits and a walk in six scoreless innings. The downside was that he didn’t record a single strikeout. That severely limits his upside. So does the fact that he is facing the white-hot Ivan Nova.

Julio Urias has never faced the Yankees. Injuries have forced the Dodgers to use Urias in the rotation, but he deserves to be there. Since his return to the fold on August 21st, Urias has only given up three runs in three starts with 20 strikeouts in 17.1 innings pitched. He still isn’t going more than six innings – and he wont – but he is still racking up the strikeouts while he is in there, making him a strong play.

Alex Meyer has never faced the Mariners. He was decent against Oakland in his first start for the Halos, giving up only one run. However, he lasted only 3.1 innings because of racking up pitches. Meyer walked four and struck out five. He is an interesting dart throw if you really like to gamble considering what the M’s did to Walker ten days ago.

Albert Suarez was solid in relief against the Padres earlier this year, but he has never started against them. Suarez has given up eight runs in three starts since rejoining the rotation, but he has only pitched 14.1 innings. The fact that he isn’t going deep into games and the lack of strikeouts make him tough to use on a full slate, even against the Padres. However, if you are playing a late only tournament, he may be worth a look.

Jake Esch has been okay in his first two starts. His eight strikeouts in those two games are also a pedestrian total. You likely don’t want to use him, even against the Braves, considering all of the other options out there.

    Best Bets:

Trevor Bauer ($9,300): The White Sox are hitting just .205 against Bauer in 151 at bats. However, what is more impressive than that is the fact that hey have only scored seven runs. That’s it. The 44 strikeouts is a pretty good total too. Bauer hasn’t given up much of anything to the White Sox. He is a strong bet to shine again tonight.

Drew Pomeranz ($10,100): You know that I’m not a big fan of small sample sizes, but the Orioles are only 3-17(.176) against Pomeranz with a staggering eight strikeouts and no runs. The Orioles are also one of the worst teams in the majors against left handed pitching. After a dreadful first three starts with Boston, Pomeranz has gone seven straight starts giving up three runs or less.

    Honorable Mention:

Matt Boyd ($7,900): The Twins are only hitting .176 against Boyd in 51 at bats, but they have managed to push across seven runs. However, he does have 15 strikeouts, and the paltry average suggests that the Twins may have had some strokes of luck to get that many runs. His high strikeout potential and an inconsistent opposing offense make Boyd a strong play.

Drew Smyly ($7,400): Smyly has a pretty good history against the Blue Jays, with one notable exception (more on that later). He has held the Jays to a .215 average in 121 at bats with 28 strikeouts, but they have already hit seven home runs off of him. The lack of baserunners has limited the damage, but that is why he is not an elite option tonight. He is a sneaky source of strikeouts, but there is risk involved.

    Dark Horse:

Jaime Garcia ($6,900): The current Cubs are hitting just .200 against Garcia in 70 at bats with just a homer, three runs, and 263 strikeouts. Those are great numbers. Can you really trust him against the Cubs considering the rough patch he is in? If you do, he could come up very big for you tonight.

Don’t forget to check out the DFS Lineup Optimizer over at FantasyPros. You can also pick your favorite players or favorite stack, and it will optimize the lineup around that! It really is an invaluable tool for you DFS players!

The Indians are still missing Michael Brantley, who has shredded Jose Quintana, but there are others worth stacking against the White Sox lefty. Rajai Davis ($3,400) is 14-49(.286) with four walks, three doubles, a triple, a home run, and two RBI against Quintana. Jason Kipnis ($3,300) is12-44(.273) with four walks, three doubles, a triple, and five driven in. Carlos Santana ($3,500) is only 7-32(.219), but he does have a homer and five RBI. Mike Napoli ($3,600) only has four hits in 18 at bats, but he has a double, a homer, and three RBI. Francisco Lindor ($3,600) is 3-10 with a walk, a double, and a pair of RBI.

The Cardinals are hitting .293 off of Jason Hammel in 167 at bats, so you know there is stack material in here. Matt Adams ($3,500) is 5-11(.455) with a walk, three doubles, and a RBI. Yadier Molina ($3,800) is 7-19(.368) with two walks, three doubles, a triple, and three RBI against Hammel. Jhonny Peralta ($3,300) has hit Hammel hard. Peralta is 9-26(.346) with two walks, two doubles, two homers, and eight RBI against him. Randall Grichuk ($4,400) is 4-11 with a cycle and three RBI. Brandon Moss ($3,500) has three singles, two doubles, and three RBI is 14 at bats against Hammel.

Arizona is hitting .310 against Jorge De La Rosa in 155 at bats. Welington Castillo ($4,100) is 8-19(.421) with three walks, a double, and two RBI. Paul Goldschmidt ($5,300) only has six hits in 24 at bats, but he has walked five times, doubled twice, homered, and driven in six. Jake Lamb ($4,000) has only faced De La Rosa four times. He has two walks and a two run homer to show for it. Chris Owings ($3,900) is 5-14(.429) with a walk, a triple, and a solo homer. Yasmany Tomas ($4,400) is 6-12 with a walk, two doubles, a homer, and five RBI. Rickie Weeks ($4,000) is 5-11 with four walks, three doubles, and two RBI against Jorge.

You will really have to watch out for flying objects more than usual at Chase Field. The Rockies have abused Robbie Ray, hitting .366 with six homers and 18 RBI in only 93 at bats. Nolan Arenado ($4,600) is 4-15 with two walks, a double, a homer, and four RBI. Charlie Blackmon ($4,600) has ten hits in only 17 tries(.588) with a walk, a triple, a homer, and five RBI. Carlos Gonzalez ($4,100) also doesn’t care that Ray is left handed. CarGo is 4-9 with a double, a homer and three RBI against him. Nick Hundley ($3,800) has a solo homer and a single in six at bats. Ryan Raburn ($2,800) has also homered against Ray, his only hit in five at bats. Gerardo Parra ($3,400) is 3-5 with a double, but has no counting stats……yet.

You may want to consider stacking Reds against Matt Garza. The injured Billy Hamilton is the only Red that has not driven in a run against Garza. Adam Duvall‘s ($3,900) only hit in three at bats is a two run double. Brandon Phillips ($3,500) is 11-31(.355) with six walks, a double, and five RBI against Garza. Eugenio Suarez ($3,300) has four hits in seven at bats with a double and two driven in. Joey Votto ($5,000) is 9-31(.290) with four walks, a homer, and five RBI. Tucker Barnhart ($3,100) only has one hit in eight at bats, but it is a home run.

Kyle Gibson has been knocked around by the Tigers. Don’t expect that to change tonight. Erick Aybar ($3,300) is 5-13(.385) with a three RBI. Miguel Cabrera ($5,200) is 6-18 with two walks, a double, a homer, and four RBI against Gibson. Ian Kinsler ($4,800) has punished Gibson. Same for J.D. Martinez ($4,500). Kinsler is 9-24(.375) with three walks, a double, a homer, and three RBI. Martinez is 9-22(.409) with two walks, a double, two homers, and five RBI against Gibson. Victor Martinez ($3,600) is 6-23(.261) with three walks, a double, and three RBI against Gibson.

Taijuan Walker last just a third of an inning against this same Angels team ten days ago. Kole Calhoun ($4,000) is 3-12 with a double, a homer, and two RBI against Walker. Albert Pujols ($4,300) only has two hits in ten at bats, but he has a homer and two RBI. Andrelton Simmons ($3,400) is perfect with a single, a double, a walk, and a RBI. Mike Trout has destroyed Walker. Trout ($5,600) is 9-11(.818) with a triple, three homers, and six RBI.

Anthony Rendon ($3,300) is 5-16(.313) with a walk, a double, a homer, and three RBI off of Noah Syndergaard. Clint Robinson ($2,600) only has two hits in nine at bats, but they are both home runs and he has driven in three.

Who in the world is Matt McBride ($2,400)? He may be the only hitter in the league that has figured out Danny Duffy so far. McBride is 2-3 with a homer and four RBI against Duffy.

Evan Longoria ($3,600) is 8-19(.421) with a walk, two doubles, two homers, and four RBI against Marcus Stroman. Corey Dickerson ($3,300) is 3-12 with a walk, a double, a homer, and two driven in. Logan Morrison ($4,000) also has three hits in 12 at bats with a homer and four driven in.

Asdrubal Cabrera ($3,900) is 2-2 with a solo homer against A.J. Cole.

Alex Avila ($2,900) is about the only White Sox player that has had success against Trevor Bauer. Avila is 6-13(.462) with three walks and a solo homer. Both Melky Cabrera and Adam Eaton have hit solo homers against him as well, but they are a combined 5-38(.132) and likely not worth the risk.

Derek Dietrich ($3,000) is 1-4 with two walks and a solo homer against Matt Wisler. Martin Prado ($3,000) is 3-6 with four RBI. How about this one? Christian Yelich ($4,600) is 6-7 with a double and two driven in against Wisler.

Brian Dozier ($5,600) is 2-8 with a walk and a solo homer against Matt Boyd. Robbie Grossman ($4,200) has also taken Boyd deep and walked twice in two at bats.

It should not surprise you that Jose Altuve ($5,100) is on this list. He hits almost everyone. Altuve is 5-15 with three walks, two doubles, a homer, and two RBI against A.J. Griffin. Jason Castro ($3,500) is 5-16(.313) with a double, three homers, and four RBI against Griffin. Alex Bregman ($4,600) tagged Griffin for a solo homer in three at bats.

Adrian Beltre ($4,300) is 4-10 with a walk, a triple(!!), two homers, and three RBI against Brad Peacock. Rougned Odor ($5,000) is 3-5 with a homer and two driven in.

Scooter Gennett ($3,300) has two hits in six at bats with a solo homer against Anthony DeSclafani. Kirk Nieuwenhuis ($3,300) is 2-4 with two doubles and a RBI.

Jackie Bradley Jr ($5,000) has a two runs homer in three at bats against Dylan Bundy. Mookie Betts ($5,500) is 3-5 with a walk and a solo homer. Sandy Leon ($3,800) is 2-3 with a homer and two RBI against Bundy.

Peter Bourjos ($3,100) is 5-11 with a homer and two RBI – the only runs the Phillies have – off of Ivan Nova.

Despite the lefty on lefty fact, Miguel Montero ($3,400) is 3-4 with a walk and a solo homer against Jaime Garcia.

Josh Donaldson ($4,800) is 9-19(.474) with two walks, three doubles, three homers, and four RBI against Drew Smyly. Michael Saunders ($3,900) is also hitting Smyly well. He is 4-11(.364) with a double, two homers, and three RBI off of him. Devon Travis ($3,900) is 2-5 with a homer and two RBI.

Surprisingly enough, Adrian Gonzalez has smoked CC Sabathia. Gonzalez ($3,300) is 7-28 with three walks, a double, two homers, and four RBI against CC. Howie Kendrick ($3,600) is 10-22(.455) with a walk, a double, and a RBI off of Sabathia.

Buster Posey ($4,500) is 6-17(.353) with a walk, a double, a homer, and five RBI off of Clayton Richard.
