D-backs tap Godley to make debut Thursday

PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks had multiple options to fill Chase Anderson's spot in the rotation and they selected to go with right-hander Zack Godley.

The team on Thursday will call up Godley from Double-A Mobile and the 25-year-old will make his major league debut against the Brewers at Chase Field.

"We had a lot of options: obviously the guys here, all our pitchers in Triple-A. But we felt like this guy epitomizes what we're trying to get through as an organization," manager Chip Hale said. "He's a big competitor and the way he pitches is what we're looking for."

Godley was acquired from the Cubs as part of the offseason traded that sent Miguel Montero to Chicago.

He was 9-4 with 2.72 ERA and a .231 opponent's average against in 17 games between High-A Visalia and Mobile.

"The way he pitches and the way he goes about it is everything we're looking for," said Hale, who declined to divulge Godley's style or repertoire. "You'll see tomorrow."

Godley has 191 strikeouts in 171 1/3 innings in the minor leagues but was a reliever in the Cubs system.

The D-backs made him a starter, which he was in college at Tennessee, where he threw six complete games as a senior in 2013.

"He's being built up as a starter, so there is an issue as to how many times he can start from here to October," Hale said. "We have to be careful about that.

"The one thing we know about him is that he's a big-time competitor, so I think he knows how to handle those nerves. I think he'll be excited and there will be some butterflies, as usual. Maybe he'll struggle early but you deal with it. It's OK, he's a young kid."

Godley could be paired with veteran catcher Welington Castillo to help calm those nerves and get him through his debut. Castillo, though, was scratched from Wednesday's lineup as a precaution after he reported tightness in his left hamstring following batting practice.

Anderson was placed on the disabled list Sunday with right triceps inflammation and will miss two or three starts. Hale said Godley will make two starts -- the second Tuesday at Seattle -- "and then we'll see where we are."

The D-backs will make additional moves to open room for Godley on both the 25- and 40-man rosters.
