WATCH: Why the Bruins get confused when people call them by their first names
The Boston Bruins released a video in which players detailed how the nickname process works in the NHL, and it seems nicknames are so much of a status quo that forwards Chris Kelly and Brett Connolly both said they aren't used to be called by their first names.
"I don't think anyone has ever called me Chris," Kelly said in a statement that is sure to upset whoever decided to name him Chris. "I don't think I'd respond to it to be honest."
Aside from mentioning their unfamiliarity with their own names, the Bruins gave slightly differing perspectives on how nicknames are established. Some said nicknames evolve out of an organic process while others said players tell teammates what to give them as a nickname.
According to Torey Krug, if a player does not want a particular nickname, that is a surefire way for the player to end up with the exact nickname he said he disliked. Adam McQuaid mentioned that maybe some guys would be willing to respect a player's wishes in that situation, but his smile said that not every team is always that respectful.
As for Kelly, the alternate captain showed off his more lighthearted side as he recounted the tale of a teammate nicknamed "Weirdo." He declined to reveal the real name of the player in question.
