Predators sign Smithson to two-year deal

The Nashville Predators have signed forward Jerred Smithson to a two-year, $1.6 million contract taking him through the 2012-13 season.

The Predators announced the contract Wednesday. Smithson will make $800,000 each for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons.

The 31-year-old Smithson has played in each of Nashville's 42 games, and he has eight points. He ranks eighth in the NHL in face-off winning percentage at 58.7 percent and ninth among forwards in average short-handed time on ice. He also has led Nashville forwards in hits in the past three seasons.

He has played in 434 career NHL games with his 404 games with Nashville ranking him ninth on the franchise's all-time games played list.
