Penguins' forward injured when puck strikes face
Penguins forward Jordan Staal left a stream of blood on the ice
after taking a puck to his face during the second period against
New Jersey on Monday night, but returned to play early in the third
period.
Staal was trying to get his stick on Devils defenseman Colin
White's clearing pass from the Penguins' zone when the puck
appeared to strike Staal on the bridge of his nose with about seven
minutes gone in the period.
Staal went down to his knees, blood quickly pooling on the
ice, before being helped off the ice.
Staal, who normally doesn't wear a visor, returned with a
full face shield during a Penguins power play 1:59 into the third
period. Blood was still visible on Staal's face.
Staal and Evgeni Malkin are tied for second on the Penguins
with 10 goals each.
The Penguins are not required by NHL rules to reveal details
of Staal's injury.
