Patrick Wiercioch joins Canadian team for World Championships

One player who was rumored to be on the trading block for the Senators all season was defenseman Patrick Wiercioch. He proved all his doubters wrong Tuesday when Wiercioch was named to the Canadian squad for the IIHF World Championships.

According to the Ottawa Citizen, even Wiercioch was surprised by the way the season turned out. When the Citizen asked Wiercioch if he would have thought he would make the team two months ago, Wiercioch basically laughed at the idea.

"Not a chance," Wiercioch told the Ottawa Citizen.  "That’s, I guess, how seasons work. As a team, we didn’t really expect ourselves to be in the playoffs at that point, either, but all the hard work is definitely paying off. It’s pretty special."

The 24-year-old defenseman recorded six of his 13 points this season in the final six weeks of the year, and Wiercioch had four points (two goals, two assists) in six games in the playoffs. Team Canada also came calling for Wiercioch's teammate, Marc Methot, but Methot will stay home due to injury according to the Ottawa Citizen.
