Oh brother: Dougie Hamilton trade could have been sparked by family issue

The Dougie Hamilton trade continues to mystify Bruins fans, who have a front row seat this season to seeing how bad the team's defense looks without the young defensive star. But Damien Cox of SportsNet recently shed some light on why the Bruins might have traded Hamilton ahead of the 2015 NHL Draft in June, and it looks like family was one of the issues.

The Flames managed to acquire Freddie Hamilton's rights from the Avalanche earlier in October, but the 23-year-old forward has never been a significant player at the NHL level. Hamilton played in 17 games with the Avalanche last year and recorded just one point (a goal). He has played in 29 NHL games since turning pro in 2012-13.

Meanwhile, GM Brad Treliving told Cox that he had never heard of the rumor, so the whisperings about Dougie Hamilton's demand to play on the same team as his brother are still just a rumor.

The speculation is that among the issues Hamilton had with the Bruins was the fact he wanted them to acquire the rights to his brother, Freddie, and Boston either couldn’t or wouldn’t.
