Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Ryan Murray, the second overall pick in the NHL draft last summer, underwent surgery on Friday morning to repair a dislocation of his left shoulder.

He faces up to a six-month recovery.

Murray, captain of the Western Hockey League's Everett Silvertips, was injured on Nov. 16 in a game against the Victoria Royals. The 19-year-old had appeared in 23 games this season, with two goals and 15 assists with 14 penalty minutes. The White City, Saskatchewan, native also helped Canada capture a bronze medal at the 2012 World Junior Championships and was expected to represent his country at this year's tournament in Ufa, Russia, before suffering the injury.
